VDH's classical warfare scholarship is interesting but I've never found his modern warfare books that engaging. That said a lot of those have some political angle so if this one doesn't maybe it's better.

Actually was thinking of Western Way of War. Have not read AWLNO yet though I may eventually.

I'm friends with a military historian who has strong disagreements with VDH's scholarship which is amusing at times.

it's awful, it's basically a thinly veiled Iraq War apologia that makes less sense the more you know about the Peloponnesian War

Man, now I almost want to read it just to see how the hell he pulls that off, because Iraq and the 2nd Peloponnesian War are...not really similar at all, as far as I can tell. Does he just make a lot out of the lack of regular pitched battles? The book gets cited in a bibliography I have where it notes his observation the entire 20+ years of war only had a few hours of traditional hoplite combat.

Dude, this makes it obvious that you were not a college student during the first Bush term. EVERYONE was comparing Iraq to Peloponnesian War because they were both examples of IMPERIAL OVERSTRETCH.

as a college freshman I literally wrote an "Iraq = Peloponnesian War" final paper and got an A on it in a Political Science class

It just seems like such a flawed analogy on so many levels. It's like when everybody tries to claim America is 5th-century Rome or something.

You ever see this? Some professors did a stylized summary of a Cicero speech to imagine how it may have sounded to a Roman in the forum. It's totally a 2015 Trump speech:

The amazing thing is this summary predates Trump's run.

Believable. VDH isn't an amazing read at the best of times, so when he's also shoving politics down your throat it can be really bad.

The Savior-Generals was an especially strange book; he tries to make the dubious claim the Union was on the brink of losing the Civil War until Sherman showed up and turned the tide in the Atlanta Campaign. That is...a very tenuous argument.
