What's really going to crush them is if they can't expand their embedded software licensing. I think there are a couple TVs that have Roku built-in, but not enough. I maybe would have bought one of these external devices a couple years ago, but I copped a TV with built-in apps instead. It doesn't do everything, sure, but my Samsung has Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Google Play, and YouTube, plus some other random stuff I sometimes use like the UFC app. The only thing I want it to do that it doesn't is interface with my Google Home.

its the best interface ive used so far, between apple tv, amazon, various cable companies, etc.
roku came with my TCL tv, which is itself a fast growing company because they are making good enough tvs for cheap in china.
so i am currently using roku to make in app purchases of movie rentals etc., but there is not really anything keeping me in the roku ecosystem if my next tv has a different platform

I like it. The key with Roku is not the actual device itself. Although device sales still account for roughly 60% of its revenue, around 80% of its gross profit comes from platform revenue, which includes the money Roku receives from various partners for transaction services, subscriptions, advertising, remote control button invoices. For instance, Amazon pays Roku a certain % for any TVOD purchase or rental made on the Roku platform and % of Prime subscription fee if a customer signs up for a Prime free trial on Roku and subsequently converts to a paid membership. It's a super high margin business as there is very little COGS or operating expenses associates with putting partners on the platform. Roku is smart to focus more on platform revenue vs device sales.
Furthermore, with more people cutting the cord and relying on OTT streaming services for media content, Roku is in a great position as it controls 37% of the U.S. OTT streaming devices market. Amazon Fire TV is in second at 24% market share and Google chromecast is at 18%.

no idea about the stocks but Roku technology is on another level from amazon (alexa/fire), google (android/chrome), and Apple (iOS/itunes). the other 3 are bigger and better companies but their streaming tv product is bloated, conceptual garbage that's never been proven. Roku is the only thing in existence that actually works right now. the only way anyone catches roku at this point is literally by buying roku.
it's the same exact shit with music and Spotify.
