Their free cash flow was negative $1.1 billion in the last quarter and they forecast an additional $2 billion in capital spending before the year is out. They have produced less than 300 Model 3's and will have negative gross margins on them for years probably because overhead costs will dwarf deliveries before production ramps up. They are producing cool stuff and I want them to maeke it, but holy shit they are burning through cash. Asking for deposits for vehicles that won't be built for years is a pretty desperate cash grab. Musk should just sell the business to Google or Apple and concentrate on SpaceX. Maybe they want to buy and are just waiting for the cash problems to worsen and Musk to get desperate.

They have actually turned a profit and it is clearly his passion. It is like a multi-billion dollar nerd hobby business.

“profit”

call me when they have less net debt in the end of the year than the beginning.

I haven't really looked at their numbers. I just read somewhere they made a profit, which surprised me.

Now part of Tesla. Their solar roofs are another example of Musk's approach. Really cool demo and a good idea, but no capability to deliver anytime soon.

you might turn out to be 100% correct but understand they are burning through cash with the understanding that there are institutional investors who are betting on Musk long term and willing to finance the company well into the future.

Yeah, I do understand this. Tons of people have tried to short Tesla and lost big. Musk is running a huge gamble that will either turn into an Amazon/Apple style success story or really flame out in grand fashion.

sure, but in his mind it's not a huge gamble. as for the bulls, they definitely see the Amazon/Apple success stories as the rationale behind their bullishness. they are betting on the CEO and his genius which is not limited to technical know-how but also includes marketing smarts.

Amazon received similar criticism in the early days. You can still find the old articles:

Yeah, he is obviously following Bezo's playbook. Tesla will either be a trillion dollar company that produces the Apple of cars and dominates renewable energy or will be bought for like a dollar by Apple/Google/Facebook/Amazon or an industry competitor.

That expenditure was roughly .001 percent of his current net worth. It would be like you buying a cookie.

Lol at OP referring to negative gross margins because of overhead costs ... overhead costs aren't included in gross margins, dumb fuck. How's your TTT degree treating you in the real world?
