I spent a year looking for jobs only to stay at my current employer with an added title ("promotion") and a salary bump to 150K which also increases my bonus and 401K match

their one ask as I wrote below: "commit to staying long term" so I said yes, but I'm an at will employee ... in 2-3 years if I leave, I can say it's been 5-6 good years here, I can't stay longer ... probably going to be pretty angry when I leave then, but c'mon

played some high stakes chicken but I was willing to walk and that's the key

anyone else ever do this

I was totally fucking stunned

THEY HAD ONE ASK: "please commit to staying here for a longer term"

I said yes, naturally, but in 2-3 years if I find a better gig I'm going to tell them it's just time after having worked there 5-6 years .... probably will hurt my reference from them, but I plan to use clients as my reference instead

they probably think I intend to stay for 10 years, but I was like "are you asking me to sign something? I'm still an at will employee, right?"

"Yes."

So basically they asked me to "commit" but I really don't think I owe them shit years down the line.

and when they say "you promised to stay!" obviously they can't force me ... I guess the only downside is that I hurt the "relationship" for future references so I should find client ones as clients won't care

the problem is that my employer has a lot of "lifers" so to them it's weird to job hop but millennials need to

to me 3 years is a long time -- that will be one of my defenses, not that it matters, but I'll tell them 3 years in this industry is a "long time"

Problem will be the next step. I'm making more than market for my job so anything I'm qualified for over the next couple of years will never match the pay. I genuinely might be "stuck" for a while, so that's why I demanded a higher title, too, to rack up years with that on LinkedIn.

My end trajectory probably tops out between 200-250, so I'll need a double income life ... better cop a law shrew

Yeah I'm kinda stuck because my employer offers better job security and benefits than anywhere else I could go. I won't really find a better employer in my line of work, even if I find a job that pays more.

Internal promotions are my only path and they are very stingy with internal promotion raises. They're happy to give me a fancier job title and small raise every few years, but realistically that's all I can expect until I'm much more senior.

How could I leave this?
