That's why I care about it most, but prices will go up for everyone.

Basically, ISPs will be able to control the speed in which you can load websites. They are certainly going to cut off all bandwidth to pirating sites, but will also slow down speeds for other sites they don't care about.

More importantly, they could increase speeds for other sites. So imagine CNN loading very quickly but not Breitbart. Imagine Facebook and other big companies partnering with them to get faster loading times.

We may even see the Internet like cable packages. You can get the sports package, where sports websites load more quickly. Want all sites fast (like now)? Well, that will cost you a pretty penny!

Trump is too fucking stupid to understand any of this. This is a cuck policy through and through, done for the benefit of their ISP donors.

FCC says big gov't doesn't need to tell ISPs that they can't give preferential treatment/throttle speeds for certain websites/Internet services. Silicon Valley corporations have made billions of dollars without investing a penny into Internet infrastructure and ISPs don't like that. Mergers between content creators and ISPs (Comcast/NBC, TimeWarner/AT&T) leads people to believe that ISPs will create cheaper packages for their own content, while charging more for consumers to access rival services (e.g., Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.).

The "Silicon Valley" framing is GC against GC propaganda. Literally every business uses the internet and none of them "invested in internet infrastructure," except indirectly through hundreds of billions in tax dollars gifted to ISPs to build national fiber optic networks (which they did not do despite keeping the money). If it wasn't profitable for ISPs to build that infrastructure they wouldn't have done it. ISPs are modern day utility companies with virtual monopolies over broadband access in most markets.

Except that your local mom & pop shop that makes $$$ from selling stuff on the Internet isn't slowing down the network to such an extent that ISPs are forced to upgrade the network. Netflix and YouTube account for 50% of peak Internet traffic. Why should they pay the same as everyone else, even though they're actively devaluing Comcast's assets by creating their own alternative entertainment?

Netflix is not slowing down shit. Comcast's customers are using the service they purchased from Comcast. If Comcast wouldn't oversubscribe it's customers to pipes that can't actually deliver its advertised speeds to all of them it wouldn't be an issue.

GC megacorp that steals taxpayer money has to invest in its own business to keep up with demand? Cry me a fucking river.

And ISPs can and do use data caps to control consumer behavior and extract profits from heavy users. They would just rather charge GC who won't complain and switch service if a competitor is ever allowed to enter the market.

This is correct. The meme that Netflix isn't paying their fair share is beyond retarded. Netflix has to pay for their data connection just like everyone else, and whoever they are buying bandwidth from has to pay someone else for peering agreements and/or infrastructure. The ISPs are 100% about redirecting consumer surplus into their own pockets.

Instead of all cars getting to use the highway equally, ISPs can block some, put others in slow lanes, and put some in fast lanes (and charge for the privilege if they want).

There's no reason to care. It's a policy debate you can't impact. If you want surface knowledge so you can appear "with it" in conversations just read the wikipedia page.

Don't bother worrying about it. If you want to know why go look at your facebook and note how the people complaining about it are the biggest losers on your friends list.
