newly single. biglaw/elite boutique senior level associate. make ~$300,000 base + bonus + $40-50,000 at my side hustle. no loans or debt apart from $500/mo car payment. net worth is around $500,000.
was just looking to move into a nice 2 br at one of the luxury blds in my city but took a tour of a sick penthouse for grins and now i'm thinking of pulling the trigger.
decedent or shrewd?

i think you're making some good points tbh.
poster above brought up whether my motivation in doing this was to get girls. i agreed that was part of the motivation, but tbh i think that's true of almost everything most guys do: what car they buy, what profession they strive for etc.
that doesn't mean that's the sole determinant or motivator--of course that would be myopic and silly.
so while i admitted that 'will this impress girls?' flashed across my mind at some conscious or semi-conscious level when considering the apt, i'm not some 17 y/o fantasizing what it must be like to be making mid six-figures i.e. "rich" and, naturally, bedding a different VS model nightly.
i think getting out of my relationship informs the decision in a more significant way: being out on my own for the first time in 2-3 years and not having every life decision be a compromise about *our* apt, *our* budgeting, *our* one, five, and ten year goals. partly i just want to have something cool on *my* own. feel like i maed it, and that's how the PH unit made me feel when i toured.
i can understand saying there's something off-putting about throwing money at something superficial that is by nature an impermanent indulgence. on the other hand, what am i saving for exactly? i'm not a christmo like you so afaik i only have this brief time on earth to enjoy. what's the point of renting something "nice enough" for $2,500/mo and watching the extra $60k tick up by 3-7% over the year in some ScottTrade acct?

This is a thoughtful answer and you make several understandable points.
To be clear, I don't simply advocate against excess because I think it's against the rules to have nice things, nor do abhor all indulgence. I just think luxury should be limited and not a status quo or a constant pursuit/obsession. I think that, in the long run, restraint is better for one's happiness and overall flourishing.
I understand the desire to assert independence and feel like you've maed it. I value independence a lot myself, though I think that's better-obtained by having freedom of action, rather than making a showy purchase. Still, there's a genuine balance here, and I think my impulse is to just balance things in a more restrained direction.
"on the other hand, what am i saving for exactly?"
This may get to the heart of it. Life has to be lived for more than just striving and consumption, imo. Obviously for me religion helps there, but even non-Godmos can pursue family, relationships, community, a cause, whatever. There's a lot of ways money can help with those things.

this kind of argument gets made reflexively on xo and while there is a kernel of truth in it, i think it's reductive and flat out wrong for people living in the real world.
for one thing, it's not all about girls. i admitted to the poster above who brought it up that that enters into the calculus (i think it does for almost all guys at some level), but that's not the only reason.
while any reason for doing this is hedonistic or self-indulgent on some level, i'm not entertaining some dumb fantasy that a 95lb dork getting sand kicked in his face for 30 years will somehow become hugh hefner by renting this apartment. and while i've been able to get laid just fine in a normal apt, in college when i was on finaid, etc., it's not like cool stuff has zero purpose in life or never makes a difference at the margins. plenty of girls (and guys) are impressed, at least on some level, by money, cool cars, and the like. and impressing those people is at least part of the reason people strive for those things. random xo poasters say "just do bigalaw for 4 yrs, live a monastic life with a mattress on the floor of a 300 sq ft storage space, payoff loans, and retire to thailand where you can live a 'chill' life running a small business giving glass-bottom boat tours" but i doubt anyone who's endorsed that path here has ever actually done it.
