2nd grade is blurry. I do know that I keep up with a ton of people from that period since we went o school together all the way until 8th grade. iirc, running home to watch cartoons was a big deal. transformers, gi joe, voltron, he-man, thundercats. we watched a lot of wwf wrestling and would do moves on each other and have fake matches in the school yard. everyone watched baseball and the mets were about to become a big deal. we played tops/scullies/skellzies which was a hood version of marbles but more complex with bottle tops that we would wax or put clay in. http://www.memegen.com/meme/ql6s6a. a lot of milkcrate basketball. http://blog.stompandcrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/milk-crate-basketball-hoop.jpg it was a good time. reagan was president. we did the pledge of allegiance every day. july 4th wasn't something you shamed. you traded valentine's day and christmas cards at school. you saw nuns in everyday life. it was 180.

there were 2 gay dudes who lived together in my building. they were part of the neighborhood just like everyone else. they owned a hair salon called "the joint" which had a big cannibus leaf as the symbol. no one seemed to give them trouble. they were just flaming homos. like...ok. junior would eventually be one of the first AIDS deaths i remember.

there was one crossdresser (tranny?) and that person was 100% unhinged.

Say no to drugs posters and rallies were everywhere at school. Different strokes was a popular sitcom and remember how hot as fuck dana plato was. Pretty sure she was one of my first crushes. Just beat that pussy up.

Michael J fox could still play pac man. Airline jackings and soviet union were the biggest national threats.

people either had WHT or HBO, but they werent cable per se. they were stand alone boxes. so if your dad wanted to watch a fight, you would go to his friend's house or yours, depending on the channel, to watch the fight. invariably your dad was drinking and all the boys of the men were there because all the moms forced the dads to take their sons to "man them up". you could steal one beer from the fridge, and split it with your friends and our dads would fake being upset but it was no big deal and they even took pictures of you hammered. you know...shit you go to jail for now.

that's fancy. i loved those cheap wrestling leagues like ric flair on some weird channel before wwf, and those steel cage matches only in wrestling magazines in leagues that weren't even televised.

are you a nycmo? i watched all the wrestling on U68 in the day. they had syndicated wrestling from across the country for a couple of years. like mid south on mondays, world class on tuesday, nwa jim crockett promotions on wednesday (what your talking about), championship wrestling from florida (thursdays) and memphis on fridays. all at like 7:30pm. one day i go for my regular wrestling fix and it's the home shopping network.

and like that. POOF. it was gone.

I loved the wrestling mags. my dad would "pay" me in wrestling magazines the days I went to work with him in the truck by taking me to an optimo smoke shop and let me get two of the "apter" mags like pro wrestling illustrated or "the wrestler".

great times. THE BEST of times.

tyson fights were a spectacle. just like the country was electric.

the only other thing that were like tyson fights my whole life was the short time i lived in the boston area and pedro was on the mound. the whole city buzzed. you'd be on the red line and the conductor would randomly say "pedro has 4 ks and no hits through 5". old lady in her office listening to the radio.

I think smoking was still ok to do in restaurants and work. I remember these cigarette vending machine and my dad would give me money to get him some. I think u pulled a knob and it would dispense it.

Edit: apparemtly this was still an option well into the 90s. I do remember playing with the ash tray lid on flights. Just open and closing it.

My grandfather would take us to Dodgers games and drink a beer or four in heavy traffic on I-10 with one elbow on the window, taking sips as we went along. when he was done he'd crunch the can and hand it back to myself or sister and say "y'all put that down under the seat where no one can see"

this movie was in post-production in 1985 (it came out in 1986). probably the best synopsis of how kickass america was at the time. also probably one of the best intros to a movie EVER. brings back fond memories because this is the first movie i can recall ever seeing at a movie theater (with my now-deceased grandpa).
