I agree that this is a problem. And its part of the reason classical music has become less and less popular over the years. You really need a considerable amount of education to even enjoy this, even more the understand and fully appreciate it.

But this is the issue of the art form, it's only going to become increasingly complex. Should we stop making art because it's too exclusive? People thought Beethovens Eroica Symphony was too taxing for "regular" audiences. Now that is pretty much laughable.

Having said all of this, I don't think this is a piece that you need to be able to identify every scale to enjoy. Yes it's modern and challenging, but I'd say its less challenging than the old Modernists (Schoenberg etc.). Even a prole can listen to a Mozart piece and get something out of it, even if he can't fully appreciate the extant of the artistry.

the fact is that there's no shortage of scholarship on the greatest composers of this tradition, bach, mozart, and beethoven, but they were able to write music that the masses could appreciate. great art isn't about complexity for its own sake.

Sure, but I don’t think our evaluation should be as crude as, “piece x is less influential than the great piece y, therefore piece x is not great.” Aesthetic evaluations can be still be made with context.

I think there’s room for all kinds of art, some more esoteric than others. The avant- garde has always been challenging, that’s kind of the point.

Ariana Grande has communicated to a much larger swath of society than any classical composer ever... J. k. Rowling has been read more than James Joyce. I simply disagree that great art must be appreciated by the masses. Today’s masses especially are remarkably ignorant and lazy. They lack the attention span to even enjoy the more easily digestible music of earlier classical eras. If we pegged everything to their limited understanding and taste we’d be dismissing anything of even moderate complexity.

Take Chopin’s sonata #3. Not exactly something Joe the Plumber would be able to enjoy on a meaningful level.

arguing that popular appeal is the sole criterion of artistic merit, and saying that greatest works of art seem to speak to everyone are two very different claims on every level.

seems like your idea of the arts is motivated at least in part by a wish to differentiate yourself from the inferior masses.

I think using popular appeal as any sort of criterion at all is a misstep, considering that popular appeal is not directly correlated quality. Those works would’ve been great regardless of whether the masses enjoyed them or not. These days I doubt the average person could get much out of a late Beethoven sonata. They’d most likely fall asleep.

I really don’t need to try to differentiate myself because I genuinely do not enjoy Katy Perry or most of pop culture. I just think that using their tastes to inform our opinion of art is pointless. If that makes you think I’m a snob, that’s fine. But pegging high art to the tastes of the unrefined is incredibly limiting, and pointless unless you’re trying to prove something about your reverence for the “common man”.
