401(k) investors could see the rules change for their retirement savings accounts when a Republican-led House committee rolls out its proposed tax overhaul plan.
The biggest potential change is slashing the maximum limit on pre-tax 401(k) contributions to $2,400 a year, down from the $18,000 IRS limit for Americans under 50 and $24,000 for Americans 50 or older in 2017. That would mean savers would be able to stash away fewer dollars in their accounts before income tax is calculated. |

2.) The proposal mentioned in this article would limit traditional 401(k) contributions to $2,400 and allow an additional amount up to the usual current limit as Roth 401(k) contributions. This would not have a large impact on most workers/retirees. It would, however, have a significant impact on the 401(k) investment advisor/recordkeeper/fiduciary industry that works on fees based on a percentage of invested assets. The total invested assets would be lower under a Roth savings plan than under a traditional plan, even if the retirees would ultimately receive the same amount after-tax. So such a change would significantly hurt the investment advisor/recordkeeper/fiduciary leeches, even if it did not significantly affect retirees. This misalignment of incentives also leads me to put more weight in my hypothesis that this is lobbyist flame. |
