I hated everything about my job. Everything. I was so miserable that the only way I kept it together was by counting the days until I left. I had a firm date in mind.

Six months before I left I put a piece of paper inside a desk drawer and, every day, added a hash mark. Sort of like prison. The only enjoyable part of my day was adding another hash mark each day, seeing how much closer I was to 180 days and the end of that hellhole.

When the week came around I couldn't control my excitement. I had completely signed out by then and basically stopped responding to most projects. I spent most of the week working on documents and shit for my firm. The day I quit I couldn't wipe the fucking smile off my face. Telling the fuckface partner I was done was one of the greatest feelings in my career.

It took two hours to set up the restaurant for lunch and we got paid minimum wage for waiters, which was only $2.13/hour at the time, lower than the minimum wage for non-waiters.

So as I'm waiting for my first customers after I set up the restaurant the manager asked me who was responsible for stocking the wine cooler the night before.

I worked the night before but had no idea whose job it was to stock the wine cooler. There were three of us working that night.

Since no one took responsibility he fired all three of us.

I go, "Thanks for letting me set up the entire restaurant, you motherfucker," and I slammed the door behind me.

Later that day one of the waitresses who was also fired called me up and told me that she got her job back by apologizing. The manager told her the firing was just a "test." She encouraged me to talk to him and get my job back.

I told her I called him a motherfucker and she still encouraged me to go back. So I did and the motherfucker hired me back.

i know it put them in a huge lurch, because they were already vastly understaffed for the amount of work required (which caused them to take advantage of everyone) and they had had so many other people quit, but it felt good to finally say "fuck it," you aren't using me and treating me like a piece of shit while doing it any longer.

i also quit my teaching gig on the spot when the principal came in to bitch at me for not having some standard or "question of the day" or something written on the chalkboard. this was right after i learned they were only going to pay me $37k despite my advanced degree; had given me a mountain of special education paperwork to fill out for my students, even though i wasn't a special ed teacher, and had a kid shove me and threaten to punch me, all while he was back in class the next day & their "school psychologist" insinuated i was the one who was in the wrong.

so i just said to the principal, "you know what, this isn't working out. i resign."

he said, "well, i wasn't expecting that."
