Why do you say dining rooms are reviled, though? Haven't heard that. I have a decent sized dining room and actually looked for this as a feature when I bought my house. I'd love to have an even larger dining room (and table) so I can have all my family/wife's family over for holidays without needing extra tables.

It's insane that we pay for free public daycare through 4-yr college in some states now for EVERYONE. And "graduates" come out of all that with no skills or job prospects. What a waste of taxpayer $$$

in NYC/SF - there is an entire class of people over 40 years of age or so who really had to do almost nothing else in life other than having any job that would enable them to rent a fucking apartment in NYC/SF.

This helps to create a disconnected faux-elite.

Now that the real estate has done what it has, they turnaround and sublease or AirBnB or whatever, or act like Professional Tenants (which helps lead to landlord fatigue and leads to market consolidation)

Some hippy burnout is paying $800-$1000 on a 2 or 3 BR apartment in a prime area and then turns around and rents it to someone else for $3-6k, they're also collecting social security by now and who knows what else. Living in Thailand or somewhere else many times - or paying nothing in rent.

This seriously screws over younger people for many reasons - where younger people pay dramatically more of their income in rent for the single reason of being born later than boomers and not being able to gain employment as quickly as boomers did.

When I was young and dumb, I took seriously the pitfalls of things like hasty generalizations, strawmen and ad hominen arguments, working hard to avoid them and reason clearly

But, in modern parlance, every fallacy has been inverted and renamed such that even questioning the fallacy makes you the villain.

For instance:

Libs are all about hasty generalizations that assist their narrative. They just call them "lived experiences" and berate you for questioning them (unless they're the lived experiences of white men, then they're inevitably some form of -ism).

Libs will gleefully attack a strawman. When called out on it being a strawman, they will say it's a "dog whistle" and claim they're attacking what the speaker really meant. Even Her got this treatment with the whole superpredator thing.

Libs love ad hominen and have an entire parlance whereby somebody is automatically wrong if they have "privilege" and an argument can be dismissed based on the demographic characteristics of the speaker (whitesplaining, mansplaining, etc.).

The search for truth is hard enough when we attempted to engage with ideas and did our best to avoid fallacious thinking. But in the modern era, we're not even trying. We're just redressing fallacies and calling them something different to "win."

That is true, but it is not as if we enjoy a public discourse that appreciates that distinction.

In a rational discourse, I could say something like: "I generally accept the narrative that police mistreat black bros. I don't think an entire ethnic group is running elaborate flame on this topic, so I'll accept the accumulated anecdotes for these purposes. It must be incredibly frustrating to be a good dude and be harassed because other bros with your skin color are criminals. But I would like to discuss this *particular* incident dispassionately and judge it based on the evidence we have."

There's no room for that. If I actually tried to have a conversation like this on social media or, god forbid, at work I would be out of a job. The lib hivemind has ensured silence at the end of an economic sword and it all traces back to the forced acceptance of their fallacies.
