like how Aerosmith's biggest hit was the execrable "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing," or Elton John's biggest single in his career by far was the soppy, uninspiring "Candle in the Wind '97."

The Doors' oeuvre is stupidly overrated & Light My Fire is like their only decent song

Edit: LMF is only their third most popular song anyway

good, but still vastly overrated, IMO.

every insecure teenager who wasn't super popular thought the song, like, totally expressed their feelings.

but it is not close to the brilliant artistic achievement some would have you believe. it's pretty trite, albeit with a good bridge.

Yeah, it's probably fine. I just personally find it really insipid, plus it does a poor job of representing them in general. That they themselves refuse to play it bears this out.

not a bad choice.

there are multiple better songs just on that debut album (which is excellent, btw)

"much too much," about losing interest in dating your gf when she still loves you, is catchy & powerful, but painful (in a good way).

and not many people have ever heard it.

there is a certain category of band/musician that was popular for a while, but then managed to score its biggest hit right as musical competence/innovation was fading away. cheap trick/the flame (not really a BAD song, but not that great, either), meatloaf/i would do anything for love, cher/believe, etc.

Third Eye Blind -- Semi-Charmed Life was forcememed into a pop song even though it kind of sucks. They have much better songs. Also, Semi-Charmed Life is mostly about doing meth (and even has the line "doing crystal meth will lift you up until you break") but it's often misheard. It's pretty funny that it became a mainstream pop song because you'd hear "doing crystal meth will lift you up until you break" over the speakers in grocery stores.

Some of their fantastic songs like God of Wine never really got any play.

disagree, this song is 180 man. also not their most popular (I don't think). and also every album after Wish contains their worst songs ever.

I think it is, it's the one everyone thinks about - what was a bigger song for them?

I just think it's one of their most boring hit songs (Boys Don't Cry, In-Between Days, Close To Me, Pictures of You, Lovesong are all better IMO. I guess Lovecats is worse.). And I agree their late-career stuff is all shit too.

i'd say that just like heaven is their biggest song - everyone knows that shit. although the same can be said of Friday I guess. and that one came out during the whole "grunge" thing so maybe it was actually bigger...

I think pictures of you and lovesong, and probably even boys don't cry are also pretty huge and well known.

I think lovecats is 180, I love that song and video.

It’s obviously Should I Stay or Should I Go, which is arguably better than Beach Boys and Kokomo since most people know actual Beach Boys songs and associate Kokomo with guest appearances on Full House v Should I Stay or Should I Go, which 90% of people know as the only Clash song they’ve ever heard other than maybe Rock the Casbah.

i assume you want one of their popular ones that your crowd will know and sing along to.

that's tough, because everlong and my hero are probably their most widely known songs.

i like stuff from their first album, like "This is a call."

actually, i love a song they just released, "the sky is a neighborhood," but i don't think it caught on or anyone knows it

from a 2013 rolling stone reader poll of the foo fighters best song:

"This was not even a close contest – "Everlong" got 500 more votes than anything else on the list. It might even be the biggest blow-out we've ever seen...The Foo Fighters have a lot of big songs, but this is their "Born to Run" or "Where the Streets Have No Name." When they break it out toward the end of their show, the place always goes crazy."

probably. i don't think grohl would have stayed in nirvana for a heck of a lot longer. he had his own material he was writing and cobain wasn't exactly too keen on including grohl's material on nirvana albums. i think he recognized grohl's talent and would have tried to keep him suppressed for as long as possible out of jealousy.

I don't know about the inner workings of Nirvana, but I think that even absent Kurt's suicide the band would have ceased to exist within a few short years just due to all the drug use.

It's not their worst song, but it's somewhat shocking that Def Leppard's only #1 hit is Love Bites

I was surprised to learn that Buffett used to hang with a lot of famous beats and hippies in the 70s. Seems chill.

I don't find the surprising at all, he lived in Key West and was a pothead.

That I get, but I didn't expect him to turn up in Montana; I really only knew him as an island pothead dude who wrote some novelty songs.

I got Id was #7.

But PJ aren't a singles band and they have lots of popular non-charting songs.

A lot of their music hasn't aged well, and their last few albums are just downright horrible, but they still have some good tunes, particularly during their Vitalogy through Binaural run.

Jay-Z has four number ones: Umbrella (Rihanna), Empire State of Mind (Alicia Keys), Crazy in Love (Beyonce), and Hearbreaker (Mariah Carey). LJL.

Also Notorious BIG had 2: Mo Money Mo Problems and Hypnotize. For fuck's sake...

Dave Matthews Band. Apparently their top single was "American Baby." Never would have guessed that.

This applies to many of the bands here and the OP doesn't even say "biggest selling/charting" just "most famous". The biggest charting hit of a band is 90% of the time some shit ballad no one remembers.

this is, without a doubt, one of my most hated popular songs ever. a clique of "honors" kids at my HS (there weren't many) all LOVED dave matthews band and fawned over crash into me while wearing socks and sandals and prattling on about "dave." the song must have been on the radio 500 times per day.

i think it absolutely sucks, lyrically and musically.

"i'm the king of the castle, you're the dirty rascal...crash into me!"

"hike up your skirt a little more, and show your world to me."

just absolutely awful, juvenile garbage sung in his whiny voice.

cr.

most times "highest charting" just means a high % of teenage/20-something girls liked it, since they drive the singles market
