it's not that wing collars aren't appropriate per say -- it's that people do them incorrectly by not wearing the proper detached wing collars. also, a wing collar is the height of formality in black tie since it's borrowed from white tie and thus the rest of the outfit should follow suit (peak lapel, single button, ideally grosgrain, vest (and ideally a white pique vest) over cummerbund, etc.). |

He's also not wearing patent leather shoes.
Wing collar is lame but at least traditional.
His stud set looks like the free one that comes with a rental tux. Not befitting of the 2nd most powerful man in the US. |

The satin lapel and pant stripe are the obvious distinction from a normal suit, though of course there are modern designers who try to break the rules. Not the number of buttons.
Interestingly I could not find any precedent for whether to get working cuffs. Though I couldn't imagine a situation where I would leave one unbuttoned, I ultimately decided to go for it because why not.

for example you typically will use a cummerbund with a shawl lapel. and a shawl lapel is the better choice for a white dinner jacket. |
