probably for the best, frankly. Scouts needs to get back to being an outdoors, survival skills, and early vocational group. the lib freakout was a natural reaction to scouts basically becoming a glorified church group over the last decade.
if the churches want to start their own youth programs, have at it. |

we already have church youth groups. there was no need to have a redundant group that wears neckerchiefs. |

i don't know if my daughter would be interested. she enjoys nature and that's the backbone of our relationship. we go hiking weekly. i don't think you need scouting for the outdoors. people conflate the 2. scouting teaches much more and is, imho, the best curriculum i've ever experienced.
cubs is ok. i think it can be more challenging. you left right when scouting gets interesting. |

a lot of adults don't have the motivation or training to implement the program. there is woodbadge which is a good training program, but the creep of work into private lives and the destabilization of the family has made getting good stable leadership very difficult.
and, quite frankly, many of the values of scouting are being lost on the population generally. |

My oldest expressed an interest in soccer, so I'm coaching her rec league soccer team this spring
I don't mind signing her up for stuff as she expresses an interest in it, just to let her try out a lot of different stuff
but, it seems like it might be nice to let her focus on 1 particular thing, and sort of make that hers, instead of just following along with whatever her friends at school seem interested in |

she and i also go to church together (wife doesn't). so that's a regular thing. being a church rat isn't bad, I was one, but i really want her to have things that she is invested in. and so far that seems to be nature and dance. so i will support that. |

Actually Cub scouting in general was really fun. I remember really liking the Klondike derby a lot.
I'm not sure why I didn't continue on to Boy Scouts -- most of my friends did including 2 who became Eagle Scouts.

People are acting as though libs are responsible for destroying scouting for boys, but boy scouts have had a massive image & participation problem for 30+ years now. That timeframe predates shitlibs' penchant for destroying American institutions.
I've often felt that the transition from cubbies > boy scouts is handled in the worst way possible. I stopped doing scouts after 3rd grade. There was nothing really wrong with the den meetings, but the larger pack meetings were an absolute shitshow & convinced me at the tender age of 9 that scouting was too dorky to continue with. |

I suppose my own experience is anecdotal, but I don't agree.
I would have been an ideal candidate to have continued on past cubs and into boy scouting. I didn't really do much in sports and I ended up doing a lot of outdoors stuff with my family during those years.
If they were to market boy scouting as something cool and interesting that you were allowed to do once you got old enough, it might play a bit better. Instead I remember cub scout pack meetings where they brought in some of the older boy scouts to help run the meetings. Every single one of those older scouts were huge dorks, which was plainly obvious to anyone older than 8-9. The message I received was that if I stayed in scouts, not only would I be forced to become friends with these dorks, I'd also be forced to help babysit cubs at these big pack meetings.
IMO there ought to be more of a firewall between cub scouts and boy scouts. The only scouts that should be allowed to interact with cubs are those that have clearly have charisma and natural leadership skills (which is virtually none of them). |
