I can't really evaluate him as a writer but the episode he directed in Atlanta season 1, the one he won an Emmy for, was riddled with cliches and failed gags. Atlanta has way too many really corny, hackneyed joke attempts. I strongly suspect that's his doing.
His first album was trash and he's a mediocre MC. The R&B one after that was better but minus Redbone, it doesn't really stand out. And speaking of that song, it's good but representative of a lot of his music: he's incredible at identifying a sound and then aping it in a self-conscious way. Just listen to the 'Bieber' song he wrote for Atlanta, or the way he effortlessly slides between genres without really committing to the projects.
The video for 'This is America' is nonsensical, sophomoric posturing at an opportune moment. His message isn't complicated and the song doesn't stand on its own.
He was probably pissed that Jordan Peele became the most influential pop culture commentator on the Black American perspective and deliberately tried to overrun his stature.
Whenever Atlanta tries to comment on current issues like police brutality, profiling, transphobia, whatever, it's always an ham-fisted, scolding way. |
