linguistically -- chinese, viet, lao and thai are all tonal. mandarin is the simplest with only 4 distinct tones, all of which have sounds we use in english for expressiveness. sentence structure is generally SVO or OSV, making it easy. crazy written languages but roman phonetic-based transcription exists (pinyin, etc.)
japanese - easy phenome pronunciation, stress accent like english, three levels of honorifics, grammar is completely fucked
korean - pronunciation hard as fuck. much harder than tonal languages imo. multiple levels of honorifics that make listening comprehension hard af. grammar is completely fucked.
practically speaking, mandarin just by sheer number of speakers. |
