I just finished it and assumed the movie must've had a dozen oscar nominations. Forget whether you like sci-fi or the original, every frame of the movie is a visual triumph and it's objectively a masterpiece of filmmaking. Ryan Gosling also should've been nominated.

Oh! Well apparently you've never seen the masterpiece film "Get Out" - it's basically a modern day Citizen Kane.

You see Get Out is a triumph in cinematography, original storytelling, character depth, and most importantly for any contemporary film - bravely taking on the issue of race which is completely original and hasn't really been done before in Hollywood or pop culture / entertainment.

Sorry to be a bit harsh - but I think you might hold some outdated views where like the aesthetics and philosophical depth in art are more important than social issues and virtue signaling.

Mad Max had a whole feminist storyline (female warrior saving forced marriage wives!!! So brave!!!), which is much worthier than some plot focusing on questions like what it means to be human or sentient and AI and what the future holds for the entire human race.

fuck that feminist bullshit angle, it was a good movie period. oh you think thats why it got the nom? thats fucking gay then, and hollywood is tribalistic garbage. i suspect birdman got the win for best picture not because its a good movie, which it is, but because it was about the importance of acting and hollywood. this is the kind of bullshit that pisses me off.

It wasn't remotely as good as Blade Runner. It had great cinematography, but the plot and characters were two dimensional compared to Blade Runner. There was no deeper philosophical aspect. And the reason it won and BR didn't, as you note, is tribalistic nonsense.

Look, it was fine for what it was. Great even. But you don't watch it and go "holy fuck, that was just amazing. I will probably rewatch it 10 times over my life and it was thought-provoking as fuck."

"It didn't need extraneous character development or plot details."

Right, because to a large extent the plot and characters fundamentally didn't matter. It was an action chase flick. Full stop. The women were hot, the world just served as a background for cool vehicles, there was awesome metallic drug paint they sprayed in their mouths, they talked about places like the bullet farm, water in a desert was dispensed by opening a giant waterfall. Obviously, the details don't matter. But if it didn't get a nom for best picture I would shrug. The fact that BR didn't is completely insane.

metacritic gave ladybird and moonlight like 99. pick your poison at this point, basically. there is nothing out there that is 100 percent bullshit proof at this point. imdb is still kind of reliable, but barely at 70 percent accuracy id say for my money. maybe even at 60. just above better than even for any given film to how much i actually like the movie.

to be fair, i enjoyed the movie but also agree with these critical reviews:

The Economist was more critical of the film, calling it a "bombastic sequel" and noting its "thin and threadbare" storyline, which was "riddled with holes", and the "little more than a cameo" appearance of Ford, despite his being used heavily in the film's promotion.[105] Kevin Maher of The Times gave it three of five stars, claiming "a more devastatingly beautiful blockbuster has yet to be made", but concluding that the plot was lackluster.

great cinematography for sure

don't agree with the comment about Ford.

sure he didn't have a ton of screentime, but his character was absolutely pivotal to the plot. He was the father of the child and the entire ending hinged on his appearance.

"bombastic" yeah maybe, but not in a try-hard way. I don't think it was any more bombastic than the original. The score, for example, was an almost perfect riff on the original's, and it needs to be soaring and transcendental

that's a good thing.

any worthwhile sequel builds off knowledge of the original.

I was worried going into it that they would try to make it too standalone, but I think it struck the perfect balance, in that you don't NEED to see the original, but it greatly enhances the experience

Some of the shots lingered a bit too long in places where it didn't really do anything for the story. I didn't find it a huge flaw, but it was clear the cinematographer had some pull.

I disagree completely. Thin plot? Very few movies lately have had plots remotely as substantive as the new BR. We compared Mad Max which was just an extended chase movie but in an era of comic book movies wasn't bad at all. This one had a bunch of stuff that happened since the original BR, including stuff that was explored in YouTube prequels, a new rich tycoon with an entire new plan/program, the mystery involving replicants having a child, etc. What is this amazingly written movie with a complex plot released recently that was better than BR?

And Ford absolutely had a decent role in the movie and wasn't just a cameo. Anyone that says that didn't get the film.

TMF has captured a lot of the reasons I enjoyed BR2049 on a thematic level itt. Thinking about it more, have to say I've never empathized with a non-human character in a movie as much as Ryan Gosling's blade runner. Until this movie I never gave a shit about AI, clones, replicants etc. as characters in movies/TV.

Another thing I keep thinking about is how grounded and realistic this "bombastic" sfx extravaganza actually is. There's nothing in the movie consumer tech wise that definitively couldn't happen 30 years from now. There's no ridiculous space travel or other quantum physics technology exaggerated for a movie plot. In fact the different parts of earth in this post-apocalyptic wasteland feeling like different planets with different species of inhabitants strung together by quasi space travel is one of the magnetic intangible qualities of the movie that makes me want to rewatch it a few times.

I'd like to point out that there is space travel, but it was wise to leave out the mood altering and whatnot from the novel.

Space travel is discussed and is a motivation for Wallace (the new tycoon guy) for building the replicants and finding a way to get them to reproduce on their own. However, you don't see it as a major plot device (then the replicants warped away into hyperspace and we couldn't pursue them!) and the movie overwhelmingly takes place in and around Los Angeles.

Yeah, not saying they made extensive use of it, but it was there. Made much more sense in the book - they could easily have substituted offworld for the ocean floor or Australia in both films

Agree. I think he was just noting that it wasn't Star Wars/Star Trek style BS where the sci-fi is just used as a plot device to get you to wherever you want to go.

The atmosphere of the movie is incredible but the story is kind of middling, the dialogue is poor, the acting is good not great, and it's too long. It should kill in every technical category.
