Also there are very bad memories of the Boer Wars.
Afrikaners and Coloureds kind of have an alliance whereas the British sympathize with the blacks.
Under apartheid the indigenous non-mixed blacks had several "homelands" set up for them where they were segregated into their own territories. |

Apartheid is a great study on how modern economic forces can easily drive culture and topple political institutions. By the 80's, blacks were the majority of the market for most consumer goods in SA and the primary source for labor. Blacks and coloreds were fully integrated in the SA economy. The movement of labor and goods across the country became impossible to regulate through "pass laws".
The economics underlying apartheid and its fall are not discussed enough in the mainstream. There is also not much talk about how it could have been better managed. The focus is all on the hip "activists" that supposedly brought its downfall. |
