"Everything happens for a reason (that is good and helpful)" is obvious non-sense. Removes all agency. You can, in fact, save your marriage or reduce disease rates or whatever. The key is to truly understand reality, which is admittedly difficult.

I disagree that it’s nonsense. As an example, it’s a proven fact that cancer patients with a positive attitude demonstrably have better outcomes than those who do not. This obviously includes people given, for example, only a 10% chance of making it.

Therefore, the people who “truly understand reality” end up in worse shape because of their “understanding” (in the aggregate over time), while the “obvious nonsense” in fact is nothing of the sort. The key is about moving forward.

I always boldly stand by what I believe to be true, especially in an anonymous setting like this. Here, this is a great message that will help many (not all) people who need it, if only they approach it in good faith. Osteen is more of a life coach, as he preaches a winning, relentlessly positive message, that is guaranteed to improve your life + happiness level if you listen to him on a regular basis and internalize what he says. This is also why ad hominem attacks on his wealth are red herrings and completely irrelevant.

I figured a place like this one has many people who could really benefit from his message, and do think that at least some people here will follow through and do so.

However, in practice, I’ve become more and more disgusted with the Catholic Church, and specifically this fraud pope. But it’s not just him. Increasingly, the Church seems to be some kind of liberal advocacy group. Between comments from high level religious officials basically advocating for open borders, and the pope’s tacit support for socialism, I really started to question if this was worth staying a part of on the merits.

Basically, I am a fervent believer in God, and that’s my base, and do believe in the divinity of Jesus, but that’s where my certainty ends.

I’ve also always thought that many church rules have arbitrary, illegitimate, or otherwise not divine originations, and are therefore not worthy of much respect.

Lately I’ve been turned on to evangelicalism. It helps that I know some evangelicals who are absolutely wonderful people, and agree with their worldview 100%. I’m also strongly attracted to their philosophy that religion is primarily about your personal relationship with God (they say Christ, which is fine). Moreover, I like their idea that only the scriptures are holy, and have God’s word breathed into them, while people and “leaders” do not need to be afforded any sort of divine deference. That makes a lot more logical sense to me.

So that’s currently where I stand.
