Rough AF areas. Williamsburg was low income dangerous + Jews and Bushwick was Latin/shootings.
Many parts of Manhattan that are now extremely boughie (like west Chelsea by highline) were more industrial/derelict.
The city had experienced a vast resurgence but the wildfire of gentrification had only just begun.
It still had a luster of cool grittiness that I wish it still had, the last flames of which started to be stomped out during Bloomberg's first reign. |
