You cant get around the fact that even people who complain about the meth epidemic and their loss of jobs are in absolutely every respect better off now than their ancestors were.
Simply for starters, they are no longer susceptible to devastating diseases like polio. That's huge, and while its absent from our consciousness now, the very fact that its so absent is part of how well off we are now compared to just a few years ago even.
Also, we live longer, have better access to education, nutrition , art, culture, sports, entertainment, travel, medicine in general. By every metric.

Yes, it's easy to transfer money with your banking account app in a few minutes as opposed to spending 30 minutes to visit your local branch two decades ago.
That being said - consider the general callousness and transnational nature of employment these days, the absurd cost of healthcare, and finding what little money you have left over to raise a child and send them to a 60k per year school has made life much more uncertain and induces anxiety within the population. Layoffs used to be a big deal for employees two decades ago, now it's a regular occurrence.
All of these problems are fixable but America cannot get its collective shit together to tackle national hurdles. If a person never knows if his livelihood is secure more than 6 months out, this will cause widespread misery
America appears to be pioneering a new kind of poverty altogether. One for which we do not yet have a name. It is something like living at the knife’s edge, constantly being on the brink of ruin, one small step away from catastrophe and disaster, ever at the risk of falling through the cracks.
tl;dr - the world as a whole is much better off. Technology in America has progressed rapidly, but the USA has shot itself in the foot and self inflicted misery onto its own populace |

Actually, I'm half expecting the phone to ring w a decent offer this morning. I'm ambivalent on whether to go ahead to trial or not. CL had no health insurance and went to ER 4 times. but because of other characteristics unique to the case, I think that shows he was legitimately hurting --which is certainly credible in light of the force of impact--airbag deployed in his face, etc. |
