The interests of the American people are better served when government power is at the state level rather than the federal level. State legislatures were better able to resist federal overreach when they had a direct say in who the senators were.

Furthermore it was a lot easier for the senators to be controlled by a small body rather than a statewide electorate. Now the only entities with significant influence over most senators are GC Corporations.

If I recall correctly, this is the argument that was put forth in one of the Federalist Papers. Basically, if you let the people directly elect their representatives, you tend to end up with greasy back-slapping and baby-kissing demagogues. Even one degree of separation between the people and their representatives results in representatives of greater refinement and sophistication.
