1) 1 hour of serious exercise 5+ days / week
2) At least 1 hour of exposure to sunlight every single day
3) No stimulants -- period.
4) Healthy diet (actually healthy, not bullshit fake healthy)
5) Wear orange glasses as soon as the sun goes down and keep the lights as dim as possible in your house once sun goes down.
6) No use of computers or phone in the two hours before you go to bed.
7) Read before going to sleep
Until you have done all of those things consistently for 6+ months, you have no right to complain.

Waking up and going to bed at similar times throughout the week should be added.
Reading before bed and STAYING OFF YOUR PHONE/INTERNET is crucially important.
Also, only use your bed for sleeping. You want to train your brain to associate the bed with sleep.

My magic bullet is a cell phone app that plays white noise + earbuds that I can sleep with comfortably. These are the best I've found:

Lots of things can help, just depends on the cause of the insomnia.
If you’re already downing Xanax and booze every night think about what the long term effects are on your liver/body. Would be more effective and less harmful to smoke a joint with a strong Indica - that’s the most effective thing for me at least.
Melatonin and tryptophan also are supposed to work pretty well but I’ve never tried in earnest.
Have you tried the whole no screens in the last hour before you go to bed? Try it, and try reading before bed. Get into a good bedtime ritual where you shut everything off, maybe meditate etc. Your rhythm is off so you need to get your body back on a healthy schedule.

What makes you think you have a problem? You might just be a delayed sleeper or you might just not need as many hours as others. Also, we evolved to sleep two times per 24 hour cycle, not one. It's the modern work lifestyle that forces us into unnatural sleep routines and expectations.
I used to think i had crippling insomnia but then I started working from home, and having the freedom to sleep pretty much when I want showed me it's okay to sleep 5 hours at night and a couple more in the early morning or midday, it's okay to stay up late and sleep in etc. I hardly take anything anymore for sleep either.
