15-20 years ago, $50 would get two people a decent meal with a couple drinks and tip, now good luck walking out for less than $100 which is absurd. They also relied heavily on volume (the outback near me every night of the week had a wait at dinner) and alcohol sales to make money, now they are slow and it’s a death spiral of higher prices, lesser quality food, worse service etc. Millenials not doing “dates” or social stuff outside the home is hurting them, no doubt, but it’s both price and structural (how many work places do happy hour? how many families eat out at least once a week? who goes on dinner dates?).
Compare to a quick service place, two people at five guys or Qdoba or whatever is $25. Compare quality and price to a local middle market place. With the internet trends can change quickly and with Sysco a local place can do a new menu item every night, you don’t see that at chains. And the food and service is better so why spend $100 at outback when you can spend $120 (or even $100) at some local “farm to table.”
To answer the question, I ate at IHOP in the last year even though their breakfast food is much worse than Waffle House. Apparently the whole menu appeal is making dessert like breakfast dishes which I don’t find appealing. |

Prices of booze are really what has spiked faster than food. A filet at outback was $20 15-20 years ago and now is like $28, whereas a beer that was $3.99 during ITE <10 years ago now is $7-$8. It just sucks ass to go to even an applebees and have to spend $6 for a fucking miller lite. If you're not going to drink or can't afford to then all the fast casual places are now in play.
Sit down chains have a big perception and image problem that has gotten especially bad since ITE ended, not just with millennials but with boomers and gen-x as well. |
