It depends on the lifestyle you are seeking. I was in the USAF for a few years. Officers in the operational air force tend to like, those of us in support roles tend not to. You have to move around a lot, and it's tough on kids and a trailing spouse if you have them. The money is pretty good, honestly, since most bases are in low COL areas.

Hardest thing about exit is timing it.

It takes generally 6-8 mos to transition out, but you cant always time your duty stations to be in an area with a good job market for you.

Thinking Army or Air Force. I don't I want to make a career out of it, but I'd like to serve. I have a relatively small window to make that decision.

If you can hang in for 20 years, you'll retire at 40 with a fat retirement check and good training.

However, you aren't going to make any real money during that time and your family will have to pack up and move around a lot.

It really depends on what your career goals are and whether they can be achaived in your 40's

If hes going in after grad school, that means he’ll be at least in his 50s at 20yrs.

The money is fine if you peg your lifestyle to your O-3 pay and then just invest/save everything over that.

Its a good life for family. Kids are resilient up through high school.

If you live on base, its like being in 1950s America. Packs of kids running around and on bikes because its a secluded environment where everyone knows everyone else.

If youre overseas, this is a great opportunity.

If your wife is smart, she can snag a DoD BIG FED job. They have a Priority Placement Program for spouses of service members.

If on base, 100%.

If offbass, you get an untaxed housing allowance that is based on local market. If you dont use it all, you keeep the difference.

CR

BAH it based upon the zip code you live, not the actual amount of rent/mortgage.

Nitpicking here, but sure.

BAH rates by zip code are meant to be pegged to local economy.

LOL @ the "DoD BIG FED job"

No. She will get a job working at the local Commissary or somewhere on base doing admin work. Big Fed won't invest in someone they know is gonna pack up and leave in 2-3 years

If you qualify, NOAA corps is also a good opportunity to look into. Same military pay and benefits, but you probably don't have to move around that much.
