Every Marine I ever encountered 2003-2004 were desperate to get into the fight. It's only when shit started going downhill (no WMDs, fighting insurgents from Syria and everywhere but Iraq, Fallujah) that it became apparent that we were screwed. But even then, if they just kept the ROEs relaxed and actually tried to rebuild the country by fixing infrastructure, etc., it could have worked. That's what was the most frustrating thing about the whole experience - mission success seemed attainable and just a few changes in the leadership could have given us a realistic chance of making Iraq a pretty fucking good country. But too many people up top fucked up too many things.

You are on a landing craft heading towards Omaha Beach. It is broad fucking daylight and the Germans are waiting. Brass promised 5 days of artillery and air strikes to kill every last insect standing on the beach. Just for good measure, they are sending floating tanks 1 hour ahead of you to mop up any last survivors, just in case. Brilliant plan.

You are 20 minutes out. You see the beach. All of the beach obstacles and bunkers are completely intact. You think you can spot machine gun barrels pointing at you. Oh, and those floating tanks? Yeah you just passed them - they are sinking and their crews are floating around on life vests shouting for rescue.

At this point, you have two options:

1) Be a fucking retarded shitlib and say "oh well plan was good but it didn't work and this is a BS mission and Normandy is the wrong spot anyways and it's broad daylight we should have gone to Calais instead, let's call it off and regroup!" or

2) Be a fucking man, make the best out of a shit situation and do the mission b/c you're a fucknig soldier and that's your job.

Point is, EVERY SINGLE MISSION can be second-guessed and anyone with a 95 IQ can poke a million holes into every single mission and come up with a million excuses why it's a bad idea or why it's awful.

That's the very fucking reason why soldiers are expected to just do as they're told - not b/c we're stupid or idiots but because if soldiers start having opinions about their mission, nobody would ever go on a mission. We can sit and bitch about everything or just make the best of the shit hand we get dealt everyday. In hindsight it's easy to say this was right or wrong, but in the heat of the moment nobody fucking knows if it's a good or bad call, or the best or worst call. The enemy isn't sitting around waiting for you to make up your mind - they are contsantly maneuvering and fucking shit up, so the military has to be able to take a lot of risks and you need a disciplined as fuck military.

Also, my rebellion was against my parents and greedy, unreliable shady as fucks who only cared about themselves and their pleasure, with no sense of community, loyalty or patriotism.

Anyone of the guys I served with would have given me their last MRE or their last bullet if things went wrong, and I know anyone of them would have charged the enemy first if it came down to it. Yeah most of them weren't from nice families and weren't smart, but they were loyal to the core.

I still remember this old veteran who once said: "it brought tears to my eyes seeing the ones with the least to gain, sacrificing the most." If our troops don't make you bleed red white and blue and salute when you see the flag, then you don't deserve America.
