It's obvious why the narrow slice of wealthy people care about them, but do regular Republicans?

I don't hear much bitching about the taxation of treasure troves, and for taxation purposes I'm hard pressed to distinguish unearned treasure troves from unearned inheritances.

People work hard to create a large inheritance for their children, and want their children to enjoy the fruits of their work and, in many cases, continue the family farm or business. The death tax, among other things, disincentivizes people from building wealth in the first place, which is bad for the economy.

Treasure trove can easily be distinguished, as by definition the people burying treasure trove are not attempting to pass it on to anyone else, they are simply hiding it from invaders.

the "family farm" is a line of bullshit. there are LITERALLY no cases of "family farms" being sold to pay estate taxes. you are repeating talking points.

the vast majority of assets in any sizable estate have NEVER been taxed and remain untaxed due to the basis step up.

If the asset is valuable, it can be borrowed against or sold. The recipient is still ending up with a bunch of money.

Why am I supposed to cry when the $5 million farm gets sold and the heir gets $3 million (or whatever happens to be the amount under the then-applicable law)?

Are we supposed to feel similarly bad when the dentist gets taxed at 37% on his earnings?

If you think the farm disappears, explain it. You're either a fucking moron or you're using "gone forever" in some sort of metaphorical way that isn't clear. I assume it's the later. So in what sense is a sold farm "gone forever"?

Most states tax agricultural land at a much lower rate specifically because that use creates much less wealth then development. Nobody is dropping 5 million bucks to become a small dairy farmer. Farms go to the highest bidder, and that guy is a real estate developer

you're more than welcome to refuse to inherit the farm if you think that paying a percentage tax on its value somehow makes you worse off than not taking it at all. what you're really saying is that people who work for a living should lose more of their paycheck, and the country should soak up more govt debt, to give your farmer friends subsidies without making them pitch in for it.

all countries that have these types of taxes must have literally zero agricultural production. right?

No, I'm saying that trying to treat an asset that comes with substantial liabilities and cannot produce enough excess to support being leveraged like income is retarded and counter productive to all your stated goals. If they decide to sell, they will indeed be taxed on that. So what's your problem with then earning income off it instead and being taxed on that?

that the same politicians also support dozens, if not hundreds, of gimmicks to help them avoid taxes on much of the income too. funny how they never seem concerned about situations where the non-super rich can end up with phantom income that they'd need to borrow to pay tax on.

Some sales will result in higher uses. These sales will generally be socially beneficial, even if farm fetishists will be sad.

Some sales will not result in higher uses. These sales will generally be socially neutral.

you can make carve outs for small businesses and family farms.

if you're talking about fairness, how is it fair for some people to enjoy unearned, generational wealth taxed at favorable capitols gain rates when/if they decide to realize the income on their holdings, but striver wagecucks get taxed around 40%?

billionaires like buffet and gates are pretty outspoken about how the us needs estate taxes. painting anyone who is for them as unjustly trying to steal the wealth from others out of self-interest is bullshit.

yes. the narrative of "death tax" is very effective. ordinary republicans really hate the idea of government overreach, and the simple message of "the government taxes you for dying!" resonates with many.

You are putting the cart before the horse.

My contention is the Republicans used deceptive wording (the death tax) to frame the issue in a way to trick the stupid base into “wanting” this issue.

And the only reason they went through this effort is because their (((donors))) wanted them to.

When it comes to issues the base ACTUALLY wants, as opppsed to getting tricked, say, a wall, Republicans magically lose their ability to use deceptive wording to frame an issue in a favorable manner.

Wrong. They think a “death tax” will affect them somehow, due to GOP deception.

If it were properly reframed as “vote for me so that the Koch brothers won’t have to pay any taxes when they die,” the vast majority of GOP voters would no longer give a shit.

Because I framed it in a way to spell out that 99% of people will never be affected by it. Whereas the GOP intentionally does the bidding of their donors and obfuscates by screaming “death tax” to create the impression that everyone pays it when they die.

Give the GOP base a bit more credit than that come on - know the "death" tax isn't about taxing them when they die, at most they're just against it as govt. overreach, it's not like significant fiscal problems would be solved by estate taxes - the GOP generally would prefer to keep money out of govt hands wherever possible, having no faith that the govt will be anything but extremely inefficient. But I don't think it's a passionate issue for the base - just gets lumped in with govt inefficiency.

1) i'd be OK if this was revenue neutral. cut income taxes across the board. those are the people really moving the economy, not trust fund babies.

2) because the gop has been woefully incapable of cutting government spending. both houses in 2017 and 2018 plus potus and we're still deficit spending. if the gop can't nut up and reduce spending then we need to increase revenue.

receiving $9mm instead of $10mm for doing absolutely nothing whatsoever is not a "punishment." ppl working 2 20-hour jobs and still always 1 paycheck away from eviction is punishment.

better question, why do you want to "punish" people who haven't been born yet with trillions of dollars of debt for handouts to olds and military contractors? why don't the repubs who demand the spending have to come up with the money from their donors?

wasn't just about the step-up. if you inherit land worth a million, you just received income that you were never taxed on at all. it is no more "double-taxation" than when an actual hard working person pays income tax, and then sales tax when they use part of what's left over to buy diapers for their kids. not to mention that the corporation that paid them already paid its tax on the same money as well.

dollars get re-used and pass between different people. there would be zero taxes collected if each dollar bill permanently became exempt from tax after the first time it was used, no matter how many times it gets transferred. why suddenly have a problem with this concept only when it relates to the super rich?

it's not a separate issue. how things are actually working in the real world and have been for years obviously matters in a policy debate. "don't raise taxes, we already pay this one tax...but don't mention that we actually scam our way out of paying that tax, that would be changing the subject!"

Avoiding the estate tax has nothing to do with where the exemption is set, billionaires protecting assets is much more complicated and not addressed by reducing it, like at all

i am saying that i think ppl are obviously evading it because there are surely more than 1700 a year that are richer than the exemption level

big diff between normal wealthy families ($20mm or whatever) and the handful of billionaires out there, the latter need different solutions for their scams

The idea of multiple taxation isn't a particularly useful tool. Flows of money are taxed all over the place.

I earn money. It's taxed. I buy things. It's taxed. The retailer receives money and buys other inputs (labor, real estate, goods, etc.). They're taxed. Profits are earned. They're taxed.

The issue is not whether the stream of money will get taxed. It will. The issue is really where, when, and how much.

I don't see why estates should be favored over labor, investments, sales, or anything else, really.

You have such a different view of what taxation is that it's pointless to even discuss with you.

You think any money that the gov't doesn't tax is a gift from the gov't.

Under your view there's basically no argument against any kind of tax.

that's fine. on estates i think lower than $22mm is fine, upping the rate is fine especially if graduated based on estate size (why the hell should the rate on inheriting free shit by luck be far lower than the rate on UMC people who actually bust their ass to earn a few hundred grand), and cracking down on whatever scams ppl are pulling to evade the tax. basis step-up is bullshit. i don't know details on wealth tax proposals in terms of rates, exemptions, etc.

The vast majority of people - including but not limited to republicans - do not understand how taxes work, especially the estate tax. Hence all the nonsense about family farms and small businesses. (See also, FoxNews commentary on APC’s 70 percent marginal income tax rate proposal). The republicans that understand the estate tax either are wealthy enough to really be hit by it (like the Koch brothers), or hate the government so much that they basically oppose all taxes. This group does nice job of being intellectually dishonest about how the estate tax works to brainwash the rest of th GOP.

maybe democrats shouldn't lie about their desire to tax the middle class, because that's what would need to be done to actually pay for all the shit they want to do. AOC is being a dishonest bitch by saying it's only millionaires and billionaires that would pay 70% if they gave ppl like her control. Fox is actually correct that these ppl want regular ppl with low six figure incomes to pay 70%.

that's what would happen if we did single payer and all the redistributive crap they want. for every person with $1M+ in income that they can't shield through a business there's probably 1000 or more familes in the $100K-$300K range. maybe a lot more than that, that's where the real opportunity is if you want to raise $ and dems know it.

are you referring to the bill that gave temporary small tax cuts to lower tax brackets, but much larger (percentage-wise) tax cuts to higher brackets that are PERMANENT, so that it could be described in the media during the mid-terms as lowering taxes for everyone, when in reality it automatically turns into a punishment for workers and a gift to millionaires in a few years?

surely you're against all taxes, not just looking to steal from the poor to give to the rich and megacorps. so plz explain why rich people tax cuts should be permanent and lower bracket savings expire on a schedule.

lol your going with the "but it has an expiration date" line. fucking obama extended and made permanent the bush tax cuts for fucks sake, they aren't going anywhere esp as long as we elect republicans.

then you shift to "trying to take their healthcare benefits". that has actually been a direct result of obamacare. hundreds of millions have reduced access to healthcare thanks to the changes to the insurance market that he felt the need to disrupt rather than just give his small handful of proles and minorities the handouts they wanted. again you are being a dishonest little shit.
