Epic length and sweeping plot.
One of Eastwoods best performances.
Wallach, a Romanian Jew, plays the best Dirty Mexican I have ever seen.
Lee Van Cleef plays an incredible, sadistic psychopath.
The scenery is extremely strong and atmospheric despite being set in the South of Spain I think.
The presence of sub plots and the backdrop of the Civil War add a lot, especially the commentary on the absurdity and brutality of War on both the Union and Confederate sides (Represented by the Drunk Union Commander's struggle to destroy the bridge and the Confederate Camp/Prison Camp plot)
The Mexican Standoff at the end, while somehow getting back right where the movie started is also great. |
