Definitely not right now. They’re about to release a completely refreshed design of it later this year. (Which will be better but IMO kind of ugly)

In any case, idk. There are a million three row “mid size” crossover SUVs out there and they are all functionally the same and each competitive priced.

I’d probably pick the Durango if I really needed three rows and was too cheap for a Tahoe, because at least it has a little personality. But the current iteration of the Durango and JGC platform is now like 8 years old and is being replaced in the next year. So may be worth waiting. No one knows what that will look like yet tho.

Do it. You'll love it.

Also, if you get adventurous, you can put a tune on it, which is the best upgrade you can do to the Ecoboost engines, and see 50+HP and 100+ ft/lbs of torque in gains.

edit: also, if it's a 2018+, you'll get the Gen2 3.5, which is even better than the first gen, plus you'll also get the 10 speed transmission.

Not a carmo but tuning up a turbo charged engine to push power through a 10 speed auto sounds like a dubious long term plan.

Everyone knows tuning to increase boost from the turbo is a risky proposition over the long term. If it wasn't, I would tune my X6 50i to output X6M level power or more, as is available.

millions of people have tuned their Ecoboost engines without problems and continue to do so. You're speculating on something with zero knowledge and without any experience.

Explorer is not a body-on-frame SUV.

The Explorer is worse than most SUVs. Seriously, to make it "feel roomier" than a Taurus, they inexplicably pushed the door panels out (and the doors) without making the car functionally wider.

Despite the fact that it is truly the Canyonero F Series of the class, the Toyota Highlander, and specifically the XLE/Limited with the captains chairs, pwns this category. The third row seats are way too small for adults (though that's true to some extent of all cars at this size), but it's the best set up for shoving the kids in the third row and having a comfortable set up for four adults. It's perfect car for the period from oldest kid big enough for a booster until oldest kid ready to take road test for license.

Ford does the same thing that Honda does and rapes you to the tune of a $10k for the higher end package to get the captain's chairs. Highlander seems to be the only one that will do that higher end package for well under 40k.
