They're renovating the irrigation and drainage systems on the South in preparation for the '21 Open, so 2 holes are closed and they force you to rent a cart. I've played there a zillion times and I actually prefer the North more now that Weiskopf finished his redesign. The only thing that sucks is that it's impossible to hold a green on the North. Greens are fucking rock hard. I'm a high ball hitter, plenty of spin and swing speed, play tour balls (either TP5x or ProV1x) and I absolutely couldn't get a ball to check. I hit three approaches that were absolutely perfect on the front nine that bounced off the green and left me shortsided. On the back I just played everything links style.
I like the North. $100 cheaper for my Dad and the green complexes (other than the firmness issues) aren't nearly as penal as the South. Same great views along the ocean. |

there arent even that many iconic tennis venues -- whether u can play them or not. AELTC, newport (HOF), roland garros, foro italico, ashe stadium. dunno what else. a lot of the old tourneys havent even been at the same venue (e.g., cincy is one of the oldest tourneys in the sport). |

My other buddy was a college player and we typically play scratch head-to-head. I hit the ball well, but scored terribly. Lots of three putts and had 4 6'-10' birdie putts on the front nine and didn't convert a single one. Still, I had him until 13 when I hit two balls into the drink and carded a triple. Ended up shooting 82 to his 80 and he pocketed $100 from me.
#17 (Alcatraz), the hole that's pictured, was playing really tough. The wind had kicked up and was right in our face. Laser had the yardage at 157 to flag, but was playing a club and a half longer. I hit it to about 12' left of the pin (you can see it in the picture) and my friend hit it to the back of the green. He drains the 50 footer and I miss the makeable birdie and that was that. |
