I've personally never gone fishing in the Northeast, but I imagine there's got to be some good fishing up there. Something easy to catch like bluegill, crappie, perch, etc. would be easy to catch and generally easy to descale and fillet. It's almost May, so they'll be spawning soon, which will make for 180 fishing. Basically, they'll form up in spawning groups and if you find them, they'll bite as soon as your lure hits the water. You could catch like 10 in 5 minutes.

Friend, you don't use EDC knives for filleting. You use fillet knives.

Have you ever fought a large fish?

When I was guiding, I had a lot of clients that had never fished in their lives. Often after catching a king salmon, they would say it was the most exhilarating experience they've ever felt.

I used to be a fishing guide. People would pay me to take them fishing.

Depends on the fish, salmon you bonk on the head, then rip their gills out to help them bleed out. Halibut you either shoot them with a .410 snake charmer, or you just poke their gills with a fillet knife a bunch of times.

Boiled halibut? Works well with whitefish in the Midwest. Wonder if halibut’s firm texture would work for a boil.

I hate it. We called it poor man's lobster when I was a kid.

You cut it into chunks and boil it in sugar water. Dip in butter

Been deep sea fishing a few times. Amazing time if you're catching fish. Horrible time if you get sea sick because lol at turning around after setting off for an all day night/day trip. The times I've gone was as part of my family business' trips with some of our higher up employees. Some would fish, others would play card games, there was a small kitchen with a cook, so dudes were generally just eating, drinking, cracking jokes, etc. There is always 1 or 2 dudes that got sea sick and would just be made fun off for being pussies.

i went out with some friends for bluefish some years ago. I'd been before and never got seasick.

this time, the water was particularly choppy. to make matters worse no one was catching anything until we were just about to head back to land. ended up staying out for several more hours.

me and about half a dozen other people were puking our guts out and immobilized. you are just trapped, closing your eyes doesn't work. it is truly horrible.

Yea, we never experience rough waters, but those that got sea sick look like they just wanted to die. My brother was one of them once. Felt really bad for him.

I once had a client offer me a thousand bucks to bring him back to shore. I told if the others on the boat agreed, I'd do it, otherwise we're staying out. Everyone else told him to fuck off. He puked non-stop for like 5 hours.

Depends on what kind of fishing you're doing. If you just toss a line out and wait for a bite, it's just chilling in a park or out in nature. Maybe drinking some beers with your bros.

Fly fishing or other casting from a riverbank involves focusing on your cast/drift on each cast.

Trolling on a boat is sort of a mix. You're out on the water and there's significant downtime waiting for a bite, but you've also got to be strategic about checking your gear, depth, location, etc.

It's awesome.

Ironically, I've never been ice fishing in my life. People literally drive on the frozen lake in front of my house, drill holes, put up tents and fish all day less than a hundred yards from my back porch.

Still doesn't quite compute

Late winter / early spring is the best time to go IME. Don't need a shanty because the weather is mild. There's still good ice on days when a lot of the slopes are starting to get a bit warm

And your whole 'burnout' excuse doesn't really fly by then because it will have been months since you've fished

Late winter/early spring is steelhead and winter king fishing. Would much rather catch a steelhead than a tiny lake trout with a fake little fishing rod.

Fair enough

The fact that you live right on the water though... I mean, you could be out on the ice in a matter of minutes vs. the all-day affair that is going out on big water

We catch the same fish all summer long. Every now and then we catch a 16"er, but most of them are tiny. Would much rather go after 30+" steelhead. My neighbor just bought one of the tents and he was out there quite a bit. Might go join him next winter. Pretty sure he just goes out there and boozes hard just to avoid drinking in front of his wife.

TBH it can be pretty random & I generally haven't done it all that often targeting gamefish - usually just panfish

But occasionally some lakes will get *red hot* on perch. I remember times when we'd be running low on bait, so we'd just send a bare hook and still catch a few. It was so LOL.

They weren't huge perch or anything but you can put together meals pretty quickly when you're catching dozens of them

I think if you are an anxious/stressed out type you'll find it so relaxing it will feel like a religious experience.

If you are already chill it will be kinda boring so you'll need to drink 12-15 cans of beer

My favorite is hiking up to alpine lakes that are hard to get to, they are frozen for half the year and really underfished so the fish will eat anything you throw out there and there is no waiting around. You can have a full pan of trout in 20 mins
