so what exactly is he the best at. Getting a three-peat in a rigged expansion league when nike was just figuring out how to market athletes globally?

Where are the unmatched stats? Babe ruth hit more home runs than entire teams on a regular basis. Ted williams had a batting avg 4 standard deviations above his competitors. Mike tyson was like 40-0 undefeated heavyweight champion at 19 year old. tiger woods won every third golf tournament by 10 strokes for 4 years in a row. Where is the MJ unattainable greatness stat?

I ask my sportsnut friends about this and their eyes just glaze over and they mutter something about "best compethithor ever"

Nobody considers him the "best athlete" for squeaking his shoes on a basketball court. Many believe hes the best basketball player of all time but some dispute this now

well over half of your sample is completely brain dead. He's not in the conversation for best athlete as anybody can tell by reviewing his baseball performance. Cf. bo jackson

It's not just that he won so many championships. Bill Russell won more. It's that he won against such difficult competition.

Look at the Dream Team from the 92 Olympics. The NBA was at its absolute apogee. Yes, some guy today might technically average more free throws plus assists in the third quarter of playoff games. But the competitive spirit, the amount of attention paid, and amount of energy devoted, were all at highs that have not been matched.

Compounding all this is the fact that MJ was not a great natural athlete. He was cut from his high school basketball team, etc. Most of his highlights involve him getting around some other player who was frankly probably more physically gifted. He won by force of will.

I don't get the athleticism comment at all. He was extremely gifted athletically. His jumping ability, speed, and body control were amazing. But I think he also had a will to dominate everyone else, which meant that he also worked really really hard to maximize his gifts, which showed up in his amazing defense and perineter game

Is this flame? The NBA is absolutely loaded with way more talent now than in the '90s. Also MJ was one of the most explosive athletes in the NBA during his era.

NBA isn't "absolutely loaded with way more talent now." What a cockass idea. Probably 10s have a physical edge vs 90s and 90s have a skills edge vs 10s and neither is so greatly different to make either period out of the conversation in either regard. This recency fallacy infiltrates too many of these conversations.

That's a badly flawed analogy. And even on its own terms it isn't a great argument--e.g., the mens 100m has only gone down by about .2s in 20 years.

To be fair, modern players are "better" in the sense of putting up higher stats on paper while not exciting anyone. The 90s game allowed contact, which took real talent to play though.

Obviously, though, only a corpulent Jew would ever argue that Jordan wasn't the greatest basketball player of all time.

difficult competition? the NBA was a fucking expansion league during his prime. Half of the teams were diluted AF. I can start at shooting guard and have pippen rodman and kukoc win 45 games back then. Im not even entirely sure that is an overstatement.

Nice attempt at diminishing this, but Majerle was a strong player and that Suns roster was loaded with talent beyond Barkley. Johnson, Majerle, and Dumas would all be starting on competitive teams in 2019 NBA. Also, the Suns were the odds-on favorite to win that series going into it, like with the Jazz in 98.

he was incredible. never rested on his talents. was both the most talented player in the league AND the most competitive. It was the later quality that set him apart. that’s what people liked best about him. Lebron is more talented but doesn’t have the insane competitive drive that Jordan had, which is why Jordan continues to be the GOAT.

he was great but gets more credit than he deserves. lebron's arguably better. part of it is that everybody knows that baseball doesn't require great athleticism (babe ruth is among the best ever), hockey is a relative afterthought and also doesn't require incredible explosiveness (wayne gretzky is likely the best ever in that sport), and the most important players in football (qbs) generally aren't great athletes.
