A typical domestic award is 25k points. I get $500-600 domestic coach flights for 25k points by transferring them to the airlines (or even fewer points if I’m using BA points on AA).
The discount you get on Amex/chase doesn’t get you that deep of a discount. |

It is by far the maximum value for use of points. Even if you don’t do intl biz travel, you get better value through transferring points for domestic travel than using chase portal for rewards. Non-pointsmos don’t understand BA’s distance based chart for domestic travel on AA and also Singapore/BA/Korean air points to Hawaii for 25k points on AA/United/delta from west coast. You are guaranteed to be paying more than 25k points booking through chase from west coast to Hawaii since the cheapest ticket is typically $400 r/t. |

So they just recently devalued the points for partner airline redemptions, but it’s still a great value.
What I do for domestic travel is basically look for short distance routes that are incredibly expensive (for example, lax to aspen, lax to Jackson hole). They are short distances but expensive route, like $500-600 r/t in the winter. Booking with AA points are 25k r/t. But because they are short distances, using BA points to book on AA, they cost only 15k r/t (slightly higher now after devaluation). So I was getting a $500 r/t flight for 15k. It’s pretty awesome. |

Honestly the 1.5x value on chases travel site is also very solid and I’ve started doing that more. Obviously not possible to use that for random foreign airlines, random code shares that are on kayak or packages on certain OTAs like kiwi.com but still a useful thing.
The key is to use chase points only when it makes sense. If you’re not saving at least 33% to 50% by using them on a points vs cash basis, save them and use them for trips where you can. |
