Made a thread a few months ago about choosing between Israel and Japan. Japan won out and now I'm trying to nail down are itinerary. We'll specifically be there in the first half of November, with a few days in Tokyo, a few in Kyoto, plus time for some day trips to a few other areas like Nara.
Obviously, I'll be going to the big ticket items in each city I go to (Golden Pavilion, Imperial Palace, etc.). But I'd like to solicit any XObros who have been there for specific restaurants, shops, neighborhoods, or minor attraction that they found compelling. For example, CSLG strongly recommended a trip out to Himeji Castle, so that's currently on the itinerary.

Current basic itinerary. I have 8 days so in the next few days I'll attrition these options down to fit:
1. Tokyo Skytree, Asakusa District, lunch at themed cafe or restaurant, Akihabara District, Meiji Shrine, Shibuya District. Lots of these are possibly shopping things so I could end up making this a later day instead of an earlier one.
2. Tsukiji Fish Market, Imperial Palace, Yasukuni war Shrine, Ginza shopping district. Might dinner here: https://www.tofugu.com/travel/kagaya-izakaya/
3. Watch morning sumo practice at one of the stables, then spend the day hitting a few of Tokyo's various museums (Tokyo National, Edo-Tokyo, maybe a weird one like TeamLab Art). Evening on Odaiba Island.
4. Day Trip to Kamakura. See some temples and hopefully run into the many schoolchildren who go there and will be astonished by strange westerners (my BIL will along and he's 6'4, could be kooky).
5. Kyoto Day 1: Temple of the Golden Pavilion, Nijo Castle, Inari Shrine and hike to the top of its mountain.
6. Kyoto Day 1: Higashimaya District, Philosopher's Path, probably some other stuff.
7. Day trip to Nara. Todaiji Temple, Nara Park, Horyu-ji. Spend evening in Osaka's Dotonbori neighborhood.
8. Day trip to Himeji Castle, then stay the evening at an Onsen near Kobe. Maybe get Kobe beef here if it seems doable.
9. Hiroshima and Miyajima Island
10. Hakone national park. See the natural landscape near Mt. Fuji and all that shit.

Sounds 180
I remember walking around the philosophers path thinking where the f am I, in cherry blossom season it has kind of an otherworldly quality
Maybe squeeze in Kiyomizu dera in Kyoto
Odaiba isn't really that interesting IMO and it's more of a summer thing iirc, maybe skip that to spend more time in Tokyo

Just spend your days and nights walking around and going into bars all over the city drinking. Normal "tourism" shit is stupid.
You gonna be solo?

Spend more time in Osaka just walking around. It has kind of a tougher big city feel than Tokyo. Interesting contrast.
Yamazaki is like a museum. You might need reservations far in advance. Very nice nature surrounding it, different than breweries in U.S.
Enjoyed reading your trip reviews before. You would probably like visiting more historical sites in Kyoto, but I got "templed" out after a bit.
I liked visiting Nijo Castle

Tokyo Activities:
1) Imperial Palace/Tokyo Station. Imperial Palace, even if you can't get in, is cool to walk around and take some photos. In addition, the area underneath Tokyo Station is packed with restaurants and shops. Then from there, I recommend walking along the tracks toward the Ginza area.
2) Asakusa Shrine/Sky Tree. Asakusa is one of the best shrines/temples in Tokyo. It can get a bit touristy, so if you go, go at night, all the crowds are cleared out and the shops are shutdown, but its a much more personal experience. The shops just sell stuff you can find most places, but its worth walking through the shrine complex. Sky Tree is the tallest tower in Tokyo.
3) Jomon (Yakitori Restaurant in Roppongi). This can be very difficult to find and also to get reservations at, so I recommend using a concierge or someone who knows the address, then having them explain it to the cab driver. This is hands down my favorite spot to bring visitors. UPDATE: This place has become wildly popular in recent years, especially with tourists. If you go, go later at night (after 10 or 11pm), that way it will be mostly Japanese and not so many tourists.
4) Yakitori Alley/Golden Gai in Shinjuku. Yakitori Alley has a bunch of great little izakayas, but beware that many of them turn foreigners away. If you try to enter and the chef or someone at the counter holds up their arms and crosses their forearms, that means its a no-go. This, however, makes for a more interesting experience. Golden Gai is a few square blocks of little tiny bars.
5) Ebisu (around Ebisu Station): This is one of my favorite areas for restaurants and bars in Tokyo. It is also generally foreigner friendly. I recommend an izakaya called Buri where they sell sake slushies (frozen sake). Their food is also pretty good. Buri is located outside the station (I can't remember which exit). But when you walk out the correct exit, you'll see a KFC diagonally across the street. Walk to the street that has the KFC, walk down it past the convenience store on the left for about another block and a half. Buri will have glass doors and be on your left. Also in Ebisu (next to Buri) is an awesome music bar called What the Dickens. Its on the same block as Buri, but on the 4th floor of a building above a wine bar. Its on the same side of the street as Buri and the convenience store. If you're going to Buri, you might as well go to What the Dickens for a beer.
6) Tsukiji Fish Market (THIS HAS NOW CLOSED): If you're going to go, go early in the morning (around 4-5am). This way you can walk around and see the fish being unloaded and sold, then walked across the street and sold in the sushi shops. Just outside the fish market there is an amazing ramen stand frequented by all the workers from the fish market. Its an outside shop with a table setup that stand at and eat.
7) Yoyogi Park/Meiji Shrine/Harajuku: The Meiji shrine is a must see and is easy to get to from the Harajuku station. Nearby to the shrine is Yoyogi Park and a large outdoor concert stage. Near the stage they have a different festival pretty much every weekend. This is a great area to walk around.
8) Shibuya: This is sometimes called the Times Square of Tokyo. It kind of is, but not nearly as packed with awful shitty tourists. The shibuya train station is a labyrinth in its own right and worth checking out. Across from the train station is the most famous Starbucks in Tokyo (overlooking Shibuya crossing). I normally would say avoid these things, but its worth getting a coffee and going up to the second floor. Watch the intersection when the pedestrian sign turns green.
9) Mori Tower/Roppongi Hills: Mori tower has an observation deck on the roof. In my opinion, this is the best view of Tokyo. Its not nearly as crowded as Sky Tree or Tokyo Tower and its outside (pay the extra money and go out to the helicopter landing pad).
10) Hamarikyu Gardens: Its right on the canals off Tokyo Bay. Take the subway to Shiodome station, then walk.
Outside Tokyo:
1) Kamakura: It sounds like you're going down there. If I were you, I would take the train. Its quicker than driving and more scenic.
2) Zushi/Enoshima: These are two beach towns near Kamakura. If you have time, stop in and check them out.
3) Hakone: I would recommend staying one night here at least if possible. Stay at a ryokan (Japanese Inn) that has an onsen (hot springs) either in your room or on the premises. Its a beautiful area in the mountains and absolutely worth visiting.
4) Mt. Fuji: If you can get there, even just to the base, the area around Mt. Fuji is gorgeous. Try taking the driver to the 5th station, then walking up a bit and coming back down.
Osaka/Kyoto:
1) Westin Kyoto: I haven't stayed here, but my friends did and they liked the location and the hotel.
2) As far as sightseeing in Kyoto goes, just go to the temple area along the mountains and just start walking. You really can't go wrong with Kyoto no matter what you do. I personally get burnt out on shrines pretty quickly, so I just walk the streets and hit up shops.
3) Osaka Hotel: I like the New Otani near Osaka Castle. You can walk there from the train station and then you can walk over to Osaka Castle.
4) Hiroshima: If you have the time, you can take the shinkansen (bullet train) down to Hiroshima from Osaka on a day trip.

Hiroshima is a one trick pony. You’ll get bored quickly.
Kamakura is the same. Tokyo (and its suburbs) has everything you can want for days and days. Tokyo is so much more than just bright lights big city.
If you want to get out, check out Nagano. Its easy to get to and beautiful.

Talked with family. Sister REALLY likes the prospect of seeing Hakone, so that's earned a spot on the itinerary. Based on the convo, it's looking like our tentative plan is:
Sunday: Land in Tokyo, stay overnight
Monday: Hie to Hakone, stay at an onsen ryokan
Tuesday: Hie to Osaka, spend four days seeing some combo of Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Himeji
Saturday: Hie back to Tokyo, spent three days seeing Tokyo
Tuesday: See more of Tokyo in the morning, then fly home.

ah, i see. too bad-- Hiroshima is a *highly underrated city.
lots of decent recs here for Tokyo. I would *absolutely try to see a Team Lab exhibit. I've been to several in several cities across Japan and they are otherworldly cool.
I'd also see what the Mori Museum in Roppongi Hills is running. There may be a Team Lab there, but even if not, it's generally great --and the view at night is spectacular.
The Nezu museum in Aoyama is worth a visit, too. You can combine this with a stroll down Omote-sando, which ends at Harajuki/Meiji shrine.
What are your Tokyo dates? I may be there....We'll get GGTP to join us.
