every adult male should own and be proficient with a firearm from each of the following 5 categories:
1. pistol or revolver suitable for carrying with you as a personal defensive weapon.
2. a shotgun chambered for at least 20 gauge (preferably 12 or even 10, though) with different types of shell loadouts for a range of situations, from duck-hunting (birdshot) to light anti-armor (tungsten sabots).
3. a generic, versatile semi-automatic rifle with a capable optic attached to it. a cheap AR with a cheap scope fits this description.
4. a more specialized, larger-caliber hunting rifle with a good optic suitable for large game. ie, something chambered for a dangerous game cartridge like the .458 winchester.
5. a smaller, lighter rifle or a rifle-shotgun combination (an 'over-under') which can be used to harvest small game without destroying it. a .22LR rifle or similar. these are exceedingly common and cheap, and if you are to start somewhere, it should probably be here.
after this, you can start getting into more exotic or specialty weapons such as .50 caliber/20mm rifles, dedicated long-range sniper rifles, etc.
