You can be an Apache pilot as a WO or a Lieutenant, but the Lt will long term progress along a management track whereas the WO just gets to keep flying.
If you just want to be in the military, do a job (that WOs do, like flying helicopters and certain aircraft), and essentially not be fucked with, WO is the way to go. |

Rather, kids from upper middle class families are spoon fed to believe they need to go straight to college and/or not be distracted by ROTC, etc. In reality, you'll get so many tangible long term benefits from military service (e.g. veterans preference for gov and even private sector jobs, work experience so you're not applying for 1st jobs w/ an empty resume, etc) that whatever time you think you're losing is negated by the pros.
In my case, Iraq 1 had just concluded so I had a ton of family pressure to NOT join because all of a sudden the concept of actually being deployed was fresh in their minds. The irony is that by becoming a police officer, I was probably in 100x more potential danger versus what I would have encountered in the army during 93-98 time frame that I would have been in for.
I think there are a whole host of skilled / technician types of professions that people would be stupid to not gain the skills in the military. Nurses, radiological techs, dental hygienists, computer networking, airframe mechanics, etc. - why bother to pay money for the education and have a career w/o the benefits that full time -> reserve status will give someone?
