Studies found that the soldiers didn’t hit anything while firing on full auto. The only point of full auto is for “covering fire,” and single or three round burst is just as good for that.
Even three round burst is questionable. In the army I was told: while firing three round burst, with your first round you might hit the person you’re shooting at, with your second round you might hit the vehicle they’re in, and with the third round you might hit the moon. I was taught to never use 3 round burst if you actually want to hit a target. |

Belt fed, not really. But a 30 round mag in most guns is empty in a few seconds. Most people fire in short bursts.
Remember, when they passed the NFA, everyone had the view that you could not ban any weapon under the second amendment especially those with a military purpose (they were right), so it is a tax. Which, at $200, was a lot of money in 1934, but, you know, inflation. Now it is a tax that takes some hoops to actually pay, but if you want, and not barred by an unconstitutional law in your state, you could buy a triple 16in turret off an Iowa class battleship and mount it in your yard. You would pay $200 per gun, $600 total, as three destructive devices, and then you would pay $200 per high explosive shell.
And, assuming you had the space to do so, you could shell things further away than the distance of a marathon. |
