Taiwan is an existential threat to the CCP if Chinese people see it as an alternative model to one party rule. for whatever reason the communists never conquered Taiwan and now lots of arms sales have made it much harder for them to finally do so.
I’m actually more sympathetic to China’s claims re: Hong Kong than Taiwan. Hong Kong is basically just a vestige of British colonialism. Why should that get any deference? China could invite the Brits to start a third opium war if they feel that strongly about the issue
