Global warming is currently treated like an impending doom. However, if you look at even relatively recent history there are far scarier threats to our continued existence that get almost zero play from anyone. It's myopic at best |

I should add that we don't really see much information about past swings in this particular graph. I mean, it's a lousy graph for conveying that point because it gives us the last glaciation, then warm period, w tiny little squiggles tracking a basically straight line thereafter.
A better graph would be one that actually left off the glacial warming change which we all already know about and brings us basically to pre-industrialization and instead focused tighter on the tiny squiggles and compared those tiny squiggles to today. It would be more convincing to your point, presumably, assuming one of those squiggles--the last one, isn't massively different in size or degree or angle from all of the others! Also, is it right to use O2 as proxy for temperature this way, particularly relative to modern day? |

The graph shows that humanity has enjoyed a very stable climate period through our current epoch. However our recent past has demonstrated the earth goes through very dramatic swings. So dramatic as to dwarf our current carbon obsession. Those past climate swings look absolutely catastrophic. More importantly they will likely occur again and they will make climate change loom silly. It would seem our resources would best be used addressing these past known events. It was Cold, then warmed up, and now it's warming up a lot on what looks like a really significant trajectory, as far as I can tell. If things were getting COLDER and we were all worried about "snowball earth" and that our presence was radically cooling the earth down or something, then i would think the argument would be that temperatures do oscillate over a period of time and its not anything to worry about. But thats not what we seem to have.
Also Those little squiggles are too small to be anything more than a little trickery--let's see that up close. LEt's see also that they are a good stand in for temperature variability 2,000 years ago, or 50 years ago.
I'm not trying to be a jerk and I really want to understand the best arguments against the idea that we are totally fucked. Some good philosophers think we are not so fucked, so i just want to know all the possible reasons why they think what they think. |

Eg If they did not one single believer would ever set foot on an airplane again. We should be more concerned with pollution than a historically minor increase in global temperature anyway.
That said, there is ample and indisputable evidence of huge climate swings and that will happen again for certain. How much research we we dedicate to astroid avoidance? How about volcanism and potential remediation? Etc.
Even with climate change there are more pragmatic approaches that if you even dare bring up will have you cancelled instantly. |
