His early stuff cribs from a million different obscure directors and has a lot of very "show-offy" techniques (lens pulls, tracking shots etc...). I think he was insecure about his own talent and so, at times, fell back on technical prowess. That being said, Boogie Nights and Magnolia are both great and I don't think he'd disavow them.
