Georgia is pretty much a majority minority state and unlike other majority minority states like California, most minorities in Georgia are black and vote 95% dem. Additionally, lots of northern whites moving to Atlanta area and they aren't as Republican as the white hillbillies in GA so GOP is losing their margin among whites in the state even as the white share is shrinking.

Arizona is similar but mostly due to Californians moving in.

They're not losing the popular vote by wide margins. Their appeal is strongest in rural areas which gives them a nice boost as far as senate representation. Control of the senate has certainly helped them with the S Ct. The EC and house also have a slight bias toward rural representation. Losing the popular vote probably makes it harder to push through big time legislation, but over the past 15 years they've preferred playing the role of the spoiler anyway.

You could argue this from the other side. Dems are dumb for doing more than they need to to appeal to urban voters given the way the system (especially the senate) gives an advantage to rural voters.

No, given that they both went blue in the 90s. The idea that they were solidly red forever was a political fan fiction invented sometime around 2008.

It’s kind of like how Democrats today treat a college education as a sure thing to vote democrat (republicans have historically done better with the college educated crowd, even as recently as 2012).
