For those who have an IQ greater than 80, the issue for Russia isn't running completely out of ammunition but rather having to use less of it because supplies are running low. And according to ISW, that already seems to be happening:
"Russian forces had previously used 60,000 artillery shells per day (as of some unspecified date) and now only use 19,000 to 20,000 shells."

2. second article was written in the summer of '22. it merely points out that russia was expending an enormous amount of manpower, artillery and equipment in donbass for little gain. The massive losses in each category are now obvious. There's was no indication that russia would immediately be out of ammo. In fact here's the quote near the top of the article: "“With no strategic compromise and near stalemate on the ground, this will be a long war.”"
3. third article talks about himars taking out russian ammo dumps and the resulting decline in artillery fires as measured by NASA data. this is not exactly a radical argument. russian channels have admitted the serious supply and logistics challenges presented by himars.
4. I can't access the article.
5. and 6. discussing Austin's comments on russian capabilities. Austin is pointing out that Russia's only real success in the war came when they could expend massive amounts of artillery (50k shells a day) and move infantry forward after the shelling. With artillery fire significantly reduced they can't prosecute the war successfully. Not a radical or incorrect statement. The articles are pretty even-handed, noting that russia still has sources for artillery and drones, even if it's significantly reduced relative to what they could previously deploy. |

I don't know when the war will end. Russia won't be able to overthrow the gov't, take kiev, take odessa, take kharkiv, or take back kherson city. Their best case scenario is taking donbass in 1-2 years, and even that I believe is unlikely. Worst case, they're run out of UKR, maybe even crimea. I'll put my money on armistice by Feb 2024 with lines close to the defensive perimeters that russia has built within the donbass (which is farther back from their current frontline). By the end of the decade they'll be out of UKR entirely. |
