Since football gets 85 scholarships and Title IX requires the number of male and female scholarships to be equal, there are basically no D1 scholarships for male athletes in any sports other than football and basketball. And football has over six times as many scholarships as basketball. Men are not going to get a scholarship at a D1 school in any other sport unless they are literally All-American level.
The calculus is completely different for girls. I knew a wealthy family with four girls. They put them into soccer camp since they were old enough to walk because they figured that soccer lessons were cheaper than college tuition. All four girls got full soccer scholarships. One went to Stanford; another went to UCLA.
Granted, I think they knew that there was some athletic talent in the family, but it's not a completely crazy idea if you have girls and you know that they will never be eligible for financial aid. But for boys, they're never going to get a scholarship at a decent school in any sport other than football. |

Her younger sister isn't far behind. My oldest boy does baseball 4 times a week. Our youngest son is 6 and just getting started. I've told all of them repeatedly there is zero chance of making a pro level and probably not even college.
However, that's not why we do it. Firstly, they like it. My girls flip out if there is any family event that might cause them to miss a single dance class. Second, it puts them with a more consistently better quality peer group. Growing up my best friends were kids in the neighborhood. Nobody has kids anymore and there are none in our immediate vicinity. All of my kids draw their friend groups from their respective sports. I noticed this at birthdays...it's basically a dance party for the girls. Lastly, as they get older they're just now getting to the point where it's actually fun to watch. I like going and watching them. |

They'll also start seeing the team girls getting much better at a fast pace. The girls that have been successful at navigating the issue usually have another primary sport like soccer.
Btw, my girls did gymnastics for a spell too until schedule didn't allow it. The parents there were very similar. They still do some one off classes to work on certain things. |

Ballet in particular is extremely rigorous. They are terrified of being called out by the instructor. For transferable skills...they get a great ass and legs. Very few if any unfit girls past 10 years old. |

But the instructor was all kumbaya all the time, no one was terrified of that woman. It also only cost I think $95 per month for once a week class. Probably for the lower class strippers in waiting.
My daughter does martial arts. It's 180 to see her take down boys bigger than her. It's 180 to see the quiet confidence it instills. It's 180 to accumulate belts and stripes, and the life lessons it teaches are immeasurable. |

However, each of those 'spins' the girl has to have her hands, head etc in a specific position at a specific point and so forth. The instructor will yell at you if your elbows are bent the wrong way. You have to know ballet is extremely technical. It's like how I cant really evaluate a painting but a pro can totally pick it a part. So there are the physical benefits and also the character benefits like self-discipline. Ballet teachers are notoriously demanding and sadistic.

Last week we were tied and went into extra innings. We got a lead and it was time to close out. The coach tapped my kid for the save and they start with one out and kid on second. Super high pressure environment my kid would never otherwise experience. I thought it was great for him, even if he blew it. |
