Dune 2 is massively overrated, Villeneuve is a competent hack

DV is a fraud. i do not understand why people praise this guy so much. he delivers bland movies that seem like they have style or ideas or other signs of quality. but they're all bland big budget retreads that stay on the right side of 'tasteful' often enough to give the illusion of actually being thoughtful. he does have the good sense to work with great cinematographers and production designers and other craftsman with actual talent.

It was an excuse for Sci fi nerds to spew a lot of content onto the page. It's not 'about' anything. It's a loose collection of Sci fi tropes. It's not cohesive. The original story is not some kind of brilliant construct the way LotR and ASOIAF are works of creative genius. Dune is mid at best but it gets hyped because it's there. But no one ever went to sleep at night thinking Baron Harokkonen was a great character or that Paul Maud'Dib was Luke Skywalker. It's shitty source material so "copying the book" is sort of a sign of lack of vision.
Call me crazy but I still appreciate David Lynch's Dune, although obviously it remains unfinished. I would have liked to see him get another crack at it. |

the novel is famously not well written and herbert was just a druggy nerd into world-building. but i think it stands out for the complexity and creativity and executing a full narrative. he has more complete ideas in there than most people spit out during a sci fi career. i agree it's crazily overrated but there is enough there and so much is possible now that the filmmakers should not be let off the hook just because herbert couldn't really write. |

Date: March 10th, 2024 11:39 PM Author: Scarlet Filthpig the paucity of action scenes was a FEATURE, not a bug. constant fighting for fighting's sake is boring as all hell after a while. the few scenes that were actiony punched harder because they were fewer and they tended to serve other purposes than giving you an occasion to cum over CGI. i don't think there was one action scene with paul where there wasn't at least some character development as well. one of the best decisions here was making the mustering of soldiers scene much longer than the final battle at the end. that was enough of an emotional high-point to carry the rest of the movie. showing too much of the big fight, on the other hand, is risky because it's hard to make it worth the build-up, hence why everyone still talks about that first scene in saving private ryan where a giant battle scene was -- unusually -- done well. this is a hill i'd die on: most blockbuster movies i've scene have far too goddamn many action scenes with little real payoff. if that's what i cared about, i'd play an actiony video game instead. at least you have control there, so you're not just bored watching nothing important happen. even DV's bladerunner had a bunch of action scenes that added nothing to the film. dune part 2 was better off doing more with fewer. |

multiple people burst out laughing in the theater when they're preparing for the climactic final battle for control of the galactic civilization with a nuclear-powered sandworm attack with tens of thousands of fighters with lines drawn in the sand and rocks and sticks and shit. or when paul convinces the entire fremen society that he is the prophet by doing a john edward/tent revival mind-reading act with two guys. the brilliant minds who threw this shit into the movie failed to capitalize on making low-hanging fruit like riding the sandworms exciting or interesting.
there is nothing smart or tasteful or restrained about dune 2 (or the first one). they're movies made by a dumbass yeoman who people assume is thoughtful. |

To tie this back to Dune: biggest reason people seem to be dunking on this movie in RW circles that because Hebert and Villeneuve seem to fully believe they’ve made a movie about the dangers of fascism. Unfortunately they haven’t. The made a movie where fascism is cool and obviously the correct choice for Arakkis. The truth is stronger than the artist’s interpretation of it.
Another example of this: Zendaya as Chani is obviously annoying. But she’s just wrong. In the end she leaves dejected while Paul ascends to the throne. Obviously the director is trying to paint her as the only sane one. Who cares. She’s wrong. Paul wins. The fremen win.
The only leftist art that is truly bad is the art that subverts reality in order to fit their narrative. Dune succeeds because the underlying story is true - regardless how the storytellers seethe about it.
But once again, this is why the current right is incapable of making good art, they just make shit that parrots what they believe. |

It's unreasonable to expect that movies can include every single detail from a book. Instead, what DV excels at is creating models/miniatures/vibe that give you faithful small tastes that are representative of the larger whole. Masterful use of the medium and I'll watch anything he makes. I'm not really a fan of androgynous Timothee but I honestly do think he is well cast as Paul, you need someone who's a little weird. |
