in fact it used to be much better - take a look at the voting patterns of places like Oakland County and Macomb County.

Most modern U.S. cities have well diversified economies, so I don't think we are likely to see a repeat of Detroit any time soon. Off hand, the most likely candidates would be places like New Orleans, Miami, or Charleston as they start to suffer more frequent flooding due to climate change. Half dozen times a year there are flash floods up to about 50% of your auto tire, but that happens in about ten neighborhoods. Sad part is two of those neighborhoods are Brickell (the urban core) and South Beach (the tourist zone).
Both municipalities (Miami and Miami Beach) however have a LOT of money to throw at the problem and are building sea walls, venice style shit, etc.
A big hurricane will indeed fuck up Miami over the next 50 years, but there is so much money and global interest here that it will not be abandoned to crime and decay. If anything, it will continue to grow into one of the US's biggest hubs in our lifetimes. The skyline will rival Chicago's in about 15 years.
It has the cruise industry, a lot of tech, south american finance, universities, multiple corp hqs, and unrelenting tourism. It can bounce back from a hurricane. |
