Finished Goethe's Faust

part 1 had a clear plot and structure and there were parts that were really interesting. one could mostly follow it although there were parts that used strange language and had many references that the modern reader wouldn't understand
part 2 is a giant, sprawling ambitious mess, not published until goethe died, and it is basically unreadable without a study guide
i'm not sure if i appreciated reading it overall. but now i have direct knowledge of "faustian spirit" and "faustian pact" instead of relying on second hand definitions

Date: March 26th, 2024 10:17 PM Author: Lilac Elite Telephone Police Squad part 1 is a pretty standard tragedy, but the tragedy is to gretchen, the innocent girl faust knocks up and who suffers a terrible fate (but who goes to heaven at the very end). it's strange in that it ends on a cliffhanger with the devil and faust escaping. faust comes across throughout as a selfish academic type who hasn't lived life, and it is through the devil's actions that he finally comes out of his ivory tower and *lives*
part 2 didn't come out for decades thereafter. having gotten personal love in the immediate setting out of the way, faust goes back in time seeking love with helen of troy while the devil has a lot of problems dealing with hellenist culture which had very different value systems than a europe with christian good/evil values. there's a really great part about how unbacked fiat monetary printing is demonic. the end of part 2 i think was a copout -- goethe writes faust ascending to heaven regardless of his deal with the devil and regardless of all the death and destruction he caused |

For saying God's name, Satan rends his heart. He begs God to limit his damnation to a thousand years or a hundred thousand but then remembers human souls are damned forever.
Midnight comes and the demons take him off to hell. The next morning his students find the walls streaked with his brains and blood, his mutilated body thrown on a pile of horse dung outside. |
