You know what's gay? German kings calling themselves "Kaiser." That's literally another man's surname. German people thought this one dood (who wasn't even a fucking king) was so admirable that they used his name to mean "king" in the German language. Russians did the same thing.

I'm not qualified to speak about Dante, but it's a tradition that Romans themselves started doing, and I don't think there's been any serious academic treatment given to why it was done. I think it's because Rome had no rules of succession after Julius Caesar erased all the old rules. By default we expect most kings to inherit their rule, and Caesar made efforts to groom present Augustus more or less as his adopted son, and some emperors did inherit their rule from time to time, but there was no chain of continuity that connected any of them to Caesar except their ability to invoke his name.

And to be fair, English kings went through a really insane period where they tried to claim rule by divine right through some sort of inheritance from Adam. That's even crazier than borrowing a guy's name. Imagine if German kings were trying to claim they actually descended from Julius Caesar somehow. That's how fucking lit England got.
