we have a separate 2 car garage and 1 car garage. gonna make a home gym in the 1 car garage, which is about 20x11. our hvac guy is gonna put in a mini split. Q's:

- what's the CR gym flooring?

- full length mirrors throughout?

- suggestions on gym equipment to efficiently use the space and for safe lifting. i do real lifts, but i'm a twink and don't lift heavy (e.g., dont need more than 2 45's, don't need DBs above 50). thinking a cage, barbell, barbell plates dumbbells, dumbell rack, elliptical and bike.

you absolutely need a cage. Something like this would be very CR and it accepts tons of attachments

https://www.titan.fitness/racks/power-racks/t-2-series/t-2-series-power-rack/401079.html?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2a6wBhCVARIsABPeH1smTHrSZKGVL5OhyQnxBTUMcCDgw9rGn4htXnHEl8W8y7bEkV6oOQwaAiufEALw_wcB

You will need an olympic bar as well. I personally like Titan stuff since its cheaper than Rogue and works just as well - this one is all you need https://www.titan.fitness/strength/barbells/olympic/performance-series-olympic-barbell/430367.html

You will need plates. I spent a bit extra and got rubber coated plates with handles, which I recommend. Sort of like this https://www.titan.fitness/strength/weight-plates/specialty-plates/lb-black-grip-plates/GPLATE.html

You can find tons of these used on facebook marketplace too

You will need an adjustable dumbbell system, or else good luck spending thousands on an actual dumbbell set. I have these powerblocks (with the 90lb expansion) and they are great https://powerblock.com/product/elite-usa-90-exp-knurled-grip/?utm_source=Google%20Shopping&utm_campaign=Google%20Feed&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=799181&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2a6wBhCVARIsABPeH1v0EQMiBQp1QuYUTEifn-rEaROu5k0b7kCpUBBVQodeCBPnHRIIMykaAlEOEALw_wcB

As for cardio machine, that is up to you. I am a long time proponent of a versaclimber, which I truly think is the best cardio machine there is (Lebron James and lots of NBA dudes and UFC fighters use them for cardio). Or get some sort of bike - tons of used ones onfacebook marketplace post-covid. People seem to really like rowers too, you can get these for not that expensive

I am a big fan of hitting stuff - I would recommend a heavy bag or like a wavemaster standup punching bag. SUper fun too.

Let me know on the flooring - when I get a house I would like to put that hard rubber flooring they have at IRL gyms, don't know where to get it. Mirrors on the walls you can get at Home Depot with mirror paneling for decently cheap.

After the above, there are a million things you can buy, but the power rack/bar/weight set/dumbbell set will get you 90% of the way there.

wow this is scholarship. tyty.

if i can, should i get everything used except the cage? i worry about safety in buying a used cage. i'd be weary of buying used cardio machines; never know with electronics.

our prole goy seller left us an adjustable DB set. i hate adjustable DBs bc it's such a waste of time to adjust. it'd really cost thousands for 5-50?

i dont hit shit

If you get a rowing machine it should only be Concept II. The rest are shit. Concept IIs are tanks and easily last 20+ years, and have accurate watt meters whereas the other machines don't.

For a bike get something sturdy and reliable that feels good to ride. A spin bike with a fairly heavy flywheel, for example. Cheap bikes feel like shit and aren't fun to ride. It doesn't strictly need to have any "electronics", a completely analog spin bike with a heart rate monitor is a perfectly complete way to train aerobically.

I would buy minimal stuff to get started then slowly add on items as you use it so you know what you really need and can hunt for bargains.

Horse stall mats are the cheapest option for new flooring, but if you hunt on Craigslist/ Facebook marketplace you can find commercial grade gym flooring for even less. Lots of contractors end up with extra flooring that you can buy around $1 / sqft. It's much nicer and doesn't smell like horse stall mats.

You can probably get away with just a squat rack rather than full cage. The benefit of full cage is extra storage, attachments and pull up bar. If you only have a few plates, the storage isn't a huge issue and depending on your ceiling height you might not even be able to use the pull up bar on a standard cage. Pay attention to ceiling height in general when buying stuff.

Adjustable dumbbells save space and money if buying new. If you can find used dumbbells for $1 / lb or less it could be cheaper than new adjustables.

Cable machines are great but expensive and bulky. You can do a lot of the same exercises with a good set of resistance bands. These work best if you install various anchors to clip them to.

You can get a lot of bang for the buck with gymnast rings.

If you splurge on something, make it the bench. You want a good heavy FID bench that won't slide around.

Floor-to-ceiling dance studio mirrors are very expensive and unnecessary. Just get the largest off-the-shelf ones and put one or two on each wall.

Even if you don't lift heavy, it's nice to have more weight and extra bars so you can do circuits (my favorite part of home gym is you can use 4 different stations all in one circuit). You can get one set of olympic weights for bench/squat, then find cheap standard size weights and short bars to do accessory exercises. Get a few small standard size bars and you can build a semi-fixed weight set for curls / triceps etc.

For cardio, I'd get just one thing, and go with a spin bike, assault bike or concept2 rower. No elliptical. Better yet, just get a road bike or run outside.

- one of those rogue half squat cages that can be folded back against the wall

- one bar

- 4x45, 2x25, 4x10 bumper plates plus some change plates and they can lean against the wall taking up almost no space

- cheap adjustable bench off amazon, maybe by CAP or something

if you're asking these Qs of a bunch of virgin losers on xo, you're likely not super strong, and probably won't ever be because you're in your 30s (or older) already, so that's probably all you'll ever need

edit: for cardio get a concept2 rower, i agree with the poaster above who suggested that; i've had one for a decade, it's 180 as fuck

also my suggestions mean that you don't even have to give up a parking space

i had a full cage and spent years in a 2 1/2 car garage lifting and still fit 2 cars in no problem

I'm also not a fan of fold-away stuff or trying to keep the parking space. Ideally, everything should be set up for a workout without having to move it around first. It seems like a good idea in theory to use the space for multiple uses, but it's too easy to get lazy and skip a workout when you need to move the car, unfold the rack, roll the equipment around etc. before you even get started.

started as an oldmo so also dont go particularly heavy. i aim for perfect form & full rom on 3 lifts; deadlift, strict press and front squat. love love love my exxentric kbox (flywheel $1.5k) for the ability to lift heavy safely & quickly.

less is more, especially starting out. unless you're a powerlifter you can easily get away with:

nice oly barbell (even if you don't do olympic lifting they're simply the best)

lifting platform with rubber mats on the side and wood middle (you can build this easily)

crumb rubber bumpers (they do the least damage to flooring and are the quietest option)

squat stand

plate storage stand

some sort of flooring generally, people usually get horse stall mats.

you can do squats, pulls, and overhead press with all of the above, which is all you will ever need to do to be relatively strong and in shape forever. a few nice other things to have:

pull up bar attached to wall

rower or bike for cardio

some way to do dips

there's no point in doing bench press. there's no point in having dumbbells. there's no point in having a "cage", just learn how to bail a squat. don't get meme things like rubber balls or weird rack attachments (if you get a rack). if it's only good for one or two exercises, don't buy it. no mirrors

Lifting platform seems unnecessary, especially if you already have some flooring and bumpers, the subfloor is concrete foundation and this guy is just doing moderate deadlifts, not dropping weight from over his head.

Idk man, there may be NO REASON TO DO BENCH PRESS OR HAVE DUMBBELLS but he definitely needs to uh build a platform for clean and jerk

sounds fancy with the cardio crap. seems like those would take up a lot of space.

i just have a bar with enough bumper plates to pull heavy, dip stands, weight vest, a few dbs. no cage or even stand so i can move all of it into the corner and use the space when not lifting. and rollers(also compact and movable) + a real bike for indoor cardio.

horse mat stalls are credited as said ITT.

I have the best home gym and best physique on xo.

Just get 4 4X6 rubber mats from lowe’s, rogue squat stands with pull up bar. Barbell, bumper plates, change plates, adjustable dumbbell and a competition bench. That’s all you need

Some overlooked items I like:

Small wall shelf to hold phone, water and workout program.

Large clock with sweep seconds hand or digital seconds display to guage time under tension and rest periods.

Chalk bag (another benefit of home gym since commercial gyms sometimes don't allow chalk).

Decent stereo with subwoofer to get pumped up.

Cheap bodyweight hyperextension since we all have bad backs.

Some lengths of 2-inch webbing and carabiners. Can be used for weighted belt, wrist/elbow sling, belt squat etc.

Some kind of step/block for calf raises and a bunch of other stuff.

Ceiling/wall mounted oscillating fan (doesn't take up floor space).

you can rig up a makeshift safety system for solo bench-pressing by taking a pair of heavy wooden sawhorses, cutting them to match the height of your chest when laying on the bench, attaching some vertical catch-plates on the sawhorses, and placing them parallel to the bench while you lift.

if you drop the bar, the sawhorses will catch it before it caves in your chest.

The following are essentials:

- a rack from Rogue or elitefts.

- cheap iron plates in the following denominations: ten 45s (you'll grow into them), two 25s, four 10s, two 5s, two 2.5s.

- the cheapest rubber coated dumbbells up to 100 since you're currently tiny, when you need bigger ones (which you will after like a year) get them.

- A good adjustable bench from elitefts or Rogue. There's also a nice one from repfitness that looks pretty nice. Regardless, get one that doesn't have a huge gap at the seat hinge when it's flat.

- a decent power bar. Good starter bar is the Rogue Ohio bar, but there are other options. Main thing is get one that says power bar and it'll probably be to spec.

- dips attachment for your rack

- if you want a cardio machine, get a versaclimber or rower. I third the Concept2 Model D -- we have them at work and they're really great. Anything else other than a Jacob's ladder, or assault bike is a waste of your money. The rower is the most versatile option though -- very easy to do LISS and also sprints with it.

- if you don't already have these, get a pair of Inzer wrist wraps, a pair of cheap straps, and a dips/pull-up belt.

.

The following aren't essential, but are nice to have:

- plate loaded cable stack (or a regular cable stack, but those are pricier)

- a competition bench. there's very little that's nicer than a solid bench with a wide pad that is a little sticky and you won't slide around on.

- minifridge

- preacher curl station and 30lb ez curl bar

- chalk bowl

- sound system

- fan

- whiteboard

- mirrors

- platform (you can double up the stall mats for a deadlift platform and should be ok until you get to the 500s, which doesn't seem like it'll be much of an issue)

>>ten 45s (you'll grow into them),

i've been doing traditional powerlifts (DL, SQ, BP, OHP, etc) for 15 years and DL is the only time i've ever used 2 plates (ie 4x45)
