Those are your people. Its nonsensical to think we can tribe-up with thousands, much less millions, except perhaps in times of great crisis like the battlefield.
So the powerful elite simply don't see the masses as their tribe. Never have. Tbf, neither do the masses see the elites, or the other masses, as their people.
And democracy just aggravates this problem through its deceitfulness, its conceit that everyone can meet in the public square and be represented. Of course some prole janitor will never have the voice of an industrial titan, but the Lie says he does. Once we buy into the Lie, we just give cover to the ruling tribe, who can always refer to the Lie: "we are your representatives!"
At least in a monarchy, there was no bullshit. "We are royal, you are not."
No populist leader, not Trump not anyone, will ever love you. Best case scenario he hates the same tribes you do, more than he hates you, and you get to watch them suffer.
