There are many other reasons people can be pipped, favoritism and getting a new CRO with new targets that are pretty much impossible to achieve are some examples. If I had to make a guess, it would be that the entire leadership changed recently and they are making changes in teams. Whatever that means for them. I'm also not an ass kisser and I will never be, so I'm happy to move on.

if you want to fight it and buy yourself time, fight the PIP and maybe work with an employment shitlawyer. disclose all disabilities. start taking time off for migraines or back pain if you're willing to lie (remember, the company has no problem lying to you). don't sign any PIP paperwork. fight the claims in the PIP. start with a certified letter to HR responding to the PIP with the following:
"This letter is in response to the document/email/etc. submitted to me on <date>. It contains severe factual inaccuracies, to the point of constituting professional negligence. Unless specifically advised to do so by my attorney, I will not sign it because of those discrepancies between that record and the truth. Please resolve this matter promptly.
However, I agree to perform all reasonable duties requested of me, in accordance with the existing job description, commitments made by me to the team or within the company, and as requested in the document provided, insofar as they can they can be accomplished. My insistence on correcting the record does not indicate a refusal to perform requested work." |

2. If you quit without a job lined up, people will assume you were effectively fired for performance anyway. It's always easier to find a new job while you still have a job
3. Your employer wouldn't mention a PIP in future reference calls anyway. Your reason for leaving will be a voluntary resignation in either case.
4. You'd miss out on any chance of getting off the PIP, however tiny

So they said the axed guy was not peforming to standards and it was a threat, it was shared in a public channel. I figured these guys are clueless enough to fabricate stuff about how folks are doing.
So, I wrote up this letter laying out how my game is stronger than this one dude they just bumped up. If I hadn't done that, I might be the next one getting axed for no reason at all besides getting used as an example. I have no performance issues. What other options did I have?
